I know we've had threads on this before, but what a dump Melody House is. I reckon you'd be hard pushed to find a dingier record shop in the entire UK (nay the world). It has the appearance of having had a fire or a flood, and they've just opened the door to let the emergency services in - it doesn't look like it's still in business. It wouldn't look out of place in photographs taken at New Orleans just after the hurricane had hit - no shit.
And I reckon it's all down to greed. They never sell anything because it's too darned expensive, yet the funny is they have loads of records.
I'm not just talking about the one's that have prices on either, which are in the realms of the ridiculous; they have records in there which sell on ebay or GEMM for about 10 or 20 quid yet Melody House have them for sale for about £80 (I'm not exagerating there either). The thing is though these records just do not sell. They've had exactly the same tunes for exactly the same price for at least 5 years now - the exact tunes I'm talking here, not new stock.
Then they have racks and racks of tunes all crammed in, in no particular order with no individual prices on; the bargain bins if you will. And how much are these tunes..... £6 pounds each! And you know why - it has to be pure greed. It would pain those stingy fuckers to think you've got a tune for a pound (or even 2) when they could charge you £6 (or even 80), so instead they sell no tunes. Who the fuck can be arsed looking through these unsorted racks if all the tunes are £6 anyway?
So the records aren't selling and they've no money coming in, so the shop appears to be going to ruin. Do they drop the prices? Do they fuck - this has to be because they're too greedy. I can see no other reason.
The thing is it could be a really good shop, it used to be a really good shop; perhaps the best in Lancashire in 90/91. They've still got the stock there, probably as much as Vinyl Exchange, but who wants to go. Even if I'm in Blackpool I can't really be arsed. I was in Blackpool last Friday, I parked right outside, but instead did my record shopping at charity shops (where I found some right bargains), I popped into Melody House though, had the quickest of looks and then left. If the records were sorted and reasonably priced then I'd stay. I'd even make a special journey there, but not in the state it's in currently, which is a joke. It looks like it's been run by smackheads.
I'm sorry if that all sounds harsh, but it seems to me to be the truth. They could change all this tomorrow though; they could drop their unsorted stuff to £3 (or even £2, god forbid even a pound like other shops), they could even just sort through it themselves and then set reasonable prices. They should also at least halve the prices on their priced stuff - it's not selling so what diference does it make?
Will any of this happen though? I very much doubt it. The shop will either close or it'll just be the same the next time I go in for the briefest of visits in a couple of years time.
Crikey that turned into a right rant!
