New Dance Show

Does anyone else watch “The New Dance Show” on Youtube?

If you haven’t done so already then might be worth a look. It’s a show quite similar to Soul Train but recorded in Detroit in the late 80’s and early 90s. The show’s producers sourced dancers from Detroit nightclubs and told them to dance their socks off to local DJ’s spinning techno, house, soul, hip-hop.

Although the folks flexing their dancing can come off as quite cringe, its also interesting to see and hear early Techno. The DJ specialised in playing local tunes, ie Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins.

Give it a go and check out some old school techno and acid or if you just fancy a laugh.

theres full episodes of Normski's Dance Energy on youtube, is probably the UK equivalent

Yes, indeed.
I use to watch Dance Energy religiously also, even though Normski could be annoying at times.
I remember watching loads of artists such as Bizarre Inc, Altern8, SL2, Bassomatic..
It will be good viewing for todays youngsters to capture the vibe of early 90s UK fashion and dance.

There were quite a few TV shows back in the day promoting popular culture, music, clubs and fashion of its time.
Dance Energy, The Word, The Tube, Hitman and Her, Top of the Pops, BPM.

Nowadays not so much. The kids youngsters have youtube to get their knowledge.

Who remembers watching rave/dance music acts on Top of the Pops?
I remember watching Altern8, Colaboy, Shamen, Opus3, Shaft (Rhubarb and Custard).

Cheers for the heads up, we used to space out to BPM with its trippy spiral fractal tunnel visuals.

Yes, BPM was a decent show. Great late night viewing after Hitman and Her died on us.

Dave Dorrell the presenter, was not bad as DJ/producer to. I was on BPM once for a few seconds mind you, dancing like a fool at Roadmenders in Northampton back in 93.
