the source of the source (candi staton vs frankie knuckles)

after listening to the original truelove version of 'you got the love' last night, I was wondering who was the first dj/ producer to put these two together?

By the time I was proper into buying house tunes early 90ish this was a staple end of the night tune but pretty much unavailble in the north west, at least to me anyways, it was generally known as 'love rock' . I do remember eastern block having both candi staton and the frankie knuckles on trax on the wall with a note saying 'do it yourself love rock!' possilbly due to it not having copies of the truelove version to sell? but I cant recall hearing anyone doing it live on a tape though, so who's idea was it? was it done at the warehouse or powerplant? or was it an english invention? loads of guys on here with the knowledge on this one, please help, cheers, geese.

This is taken from Wikipedia:

The Candi Staton a cappella was originally mixed over an instrumental version of the Frankie Knuckles/Jamie Principle house song "Your Love", (a stripped down version of the 1982 italo-disco track "Feels Good (Carrots and Beets)" by Electra) by John Truelove (later to record as The Source) on his 1989 release 'Love/Rock' on a track titled 'Untitled (You Got The Love / Your Love)'. This bootleg release was a recording of John mixing the two pieces of vinyl together. A more polished version was re-released 2 years later, again by John Truelove, called 'You Got The Love (Erens Bootleg Mix)'.

Ok your love does very very loosely sound like it is based on the breakdown for http://www.discogs.com/Electra-2-Featuring-Tara-Butler-Feels-Good-Carrots-Beets/release/2402220 which I have and is a great record. The best version of you got the love is http://www.discogs.com/Source7-Featuring-Candi-Staton-You-Got-The-Love/release/3912077 and the House Apella which is mighty. Ed is correct with http://www.discogs.com/Source-Love-Rock/release/425964 being the first release on the Truelove. I don't have this but is on the wants but no rush as its part mixed and not meant to be great.

Not bad for a record I don't even like. Yes I have the Erens Bootleg and Remix (White sleeve original and Pink sleeve remix) but never get played! The one im missing is the original pre Frankie Knuckles versions of Jamie Principle, Your Love. Just got to get round to buying the bootleg versions which are pressed from the tape recordings distributed throughout Chicago.

These are apparently recorded directly from the demo tape which ended up with Frankie Knuckles. The tapes themselves are amazingly rare and include a number of track by Jamie including Baby Wants to Ride, Bad World and Waiting On My Angel which in my eyes is Jamie's best track especially the Dub mix although the Rodapella mix of Your Love is also a great track. Bob Heckmann also did a great 1985 remix of Waiting On My Angel on ZYX which get some play from me too http://www.discogs.com/Jamie-Principle-Waiting-On-My-Angel/release/138646
