Compression

Need some help folks

Ever since i started doing my own tracks i have never quite grasped compression & what should be compressed. I know how compression works, i.e to make the quiet sounds loud & the loud sounds quiet, i think

Is there a general rule for what should be compressed & how much it should be compressed by.

From things i have picked up i know the kick should be heavily compressed etc, but other than that does anyone have any advice? i have the Waves diamond bundle which has the C4 & RCOMP compressors

All advice greatly apreciated
