Danny,

Can this system be used to both authentically mix MP3's using vinyl, but also laptop only (Ableton stylee?)

Obviously the Vinyl bit is the important one.

Don't own cdj's and this technology makes them seem like something I do not need. I suppose the only advantage with CDJ's may be some of the effects ( I bet this has some also though) and the corrections will be a bit smoother than heavy hands?

Nice collection Danny I was pretty impressed at the Traktor scratch when I had a go, I found it could be a little fiddly when calibrating though.... Have you had any issues with it?

You can use traktor with both CDJs and 1210s - the package supplies you with discs for both kinds of decks. Although if you already have 1210s, then you may as well sell off your CDJs straight away, since any tracks that you have on your hardrive you can just mix via your technics...... or of course vice versa. But if you prefer vinyl over CD (which I assume every single person on this board does), then you are always going to mix with the vinyl discs rather than the CDs......

In addition to it being one of the most fun things you'll ever do, it also looks and sounds fantastic.

The only real reason to ever use CDJs (and thus burnt CDRs) over technics is because with digital files you have tonnes of the freshest music easily available to you every week which is easily affordable and available, unlike 12" vinyl which would make me bankrupt if i had to buy say 20 new records a week! But now there's no need for the burnt CDRs either, since you can play tracks straight from your laptop hardrive......

I've been fairly late to jump on the bandwagon to be honest, dont think there's a single 'big' jock on the circuit who doesn't use it!

You can use ableton with it to, although there's no real need, as you can just hook your midi-controller up to and run it through traktor which is twice the fun! You mentioned effects...... the software has a shit load of em built in on the interface so it even cuts out the need for an ace mixer or effects unit

The other mint thing (well for us), is that if there's a few of us djing together, then the others only have to carry a USB stick with their tunes on around with them, bang it in the lappy, and then they're away! lol tis a bit weird. I still take a load of 'special' vinyl in the bag with me as well, but each to their own i guess, coupled with the fact that a lot of the younger generation have never had the need to buy vinyl anyways

Its mint though, because if you can already mix ace on vinyl, then it deffo seperates the men from the boys, as imo it's far far easier to mix on CDJs meaning the boys tend to come unstuck so to speak

I've been like a 15 year old again for the past few weeks, mixing tunes for 6 hours a time every night.... think i've had £400 worth of enjoyment already!! So if you've got 4 tonne spare, get it hanked, you wont regret it!

Great review Dan

I am swayed I have to say as there's a load of new tunes I am itching to play that are MP3 only...

I'd be interested to see if this becomes industry standard... a welcome return to vinyl manipulation & skill (albeit of the timecoded sort)... wonder where this would leave Zabiela ?

Thanks for the review Dan, very helpful. I am very tempted indeed!

Looks like the 1210 may find a new lease of life, even if vinyl does not.

The skill element of playing a deck is part of the deal for me.

USB Stick, plus Technics, Plus Tractor = OK! You still look and play like a Proper DJ, not a nerd sat clicking a mouse. (OK a nerd playing Technics instead)

Still would never stop me collecting Vinyl though.

Danny,

Does the display show you where your breaks are like "reading" a vinyl record?

You'd still need to take a laptop, controller and the extra leads with you though, if you were playing out and that's just more shit that can go wrong. I've seen people take laptops out and ended up not playing because of some problems they've had.

I've got Serato and it's great for playing cd only releases using a vinyl disk and expensive or hard to find gems, but it hasn't replaced buying vinyl for me as lately i've been buying more original vinyl than i've ever bought and haven't even used serato for months. It just wont replace original vinyl for those of that still need an original record

Yes mate, if you look at the top image, beneath the larger audio wave frame there is a smaller bar which shows the waves and breakdowns of the full tune

you can also timestretch the top bar as well, to have that showing the full track too
