Yep, Proper Twat that night!

I remember when hearing he was booked for Hazy thinking oh dear its a bad move. He played more or less the same set of "washboard Garage" from 12 or so years earlier and had still the same shit attitude from when people were wearing leather pants and tartan trousers trying to look like D-ream.
Proper dismal

Parky @ Nude was something to behold. Beyond that I found him a tad dull.

A bit like the Hac to be honest. Nude in '89 was something to behold, by 1990 I'd wandered off to Konspiracy to listen to the Jam MC's as they continued to innovate with an eclectic mix of sounds. Plus the place wasn't full of posuers like the Hac had sunk to.

Russ Marland & Mike Pickering on Friday (Shine) nights were much better than Parky in my opinion.

The crowd on Friday's was also better as it was a little "rougher" and were not worried about getting their new expensive clothes dirty!

On the Subject of Parky, I think he was very good at a certain point in time and I liked the kind of sound he was playing. However, he was as mentioned unpredictable in what he would play and would not always play to a venue. . . .it's my way or the highway, kinda thing.

I know on here he gets murdered due to "That Night" at Hazy that I never went to and from the sounds of it quite rightly so, but it does seem to colour people's attitudes on here to a long and much wider career on the scene.

ha ha ha, remember those days? When you dressed to sweat with the knowledge you'd probably be diving through some warehouse window at some point in the evening. Generally getting home looking like you'd been in a car crash then dragged through a hedge backwards as punishment. Happy days!

Agreed.

An example was the NYE Hacienda night with P&P on back to back... Pickering would play some cracking stuff and Park would come on and play Robin S and a load of Garagey boring poncey shite and clear the floor - his arrogance levels are through the roof and he was more interested in making a decent recording for his radio show than acknowledging the crowd.

A complete bell end
I never heard him play out in 88/89 either but base my opinions on the sets from then that I have (I would've thought that you had a few?) and not from re-union gigs. Funnily enough though the only time I have seen him at a re-union do, in Brum a few weeks back, I only heard him play 3 tracks from the 90's... I reckon you would've enjoyed the night (especially with Jon DaSilva playing loads of acid late on).

I used to hate Parky after reading an article in a magazine (probs around 1996) where he said Last Rhythm - Last Rhythm was a cheesy tune that reminded him of 'sweaty ravers' or something like that.

After spending time listening through his old sets I actually think quite a lot of it stands the test of time apart from some of the commercial vocal crap he would sometimes play.

FU*k Hazy!!!

Come on guys - it was one tossing night. Show some respect to a legend and remember yer House Muzik history.
For me this comment on discogs sums up how I feel about Parky:

manchester, Sep 06, 2006 (Graeme Park Discography at Discogs)

Graeme Park or 'Parky' as known to thousands of misty eyed devotees from 1988-95 was THE original British House DJ's DJ. Along with Mike Pickering, he was the first British DJ to champion House Music in 85-87, long before Rampling, Oakenfold et al supposedly brought it back from Ibiza (& contrary to what the London-centric media would have you believe!). He was the first British DJ to really master the art of seamless mixing - which may not seem that great a feat nowadays. However back in the day when early House Music was making inroads into the UK club scene, most DJs couldn't mix to save their lives - the likes of Rampling, Oakenfold, Weatherall etc might have had an ear for a good tune but they were technically defunct. Park was a maestro for all up and coming budding DJs - Sasha, Garnier, Seaman and countless other DJs who listened to Park at the Hacienda in the early days will testify to that. What really set Parky apart from other DJs was the construction of his sets which always flowed so beautifully - almost like telling a story & he would mix vocals out of vocals seamlessly. Listen to DJs nowadays and anybody can mix beats after beats, but try mixing many of the classic vocal House & Garage records and get them to flow perfectly.

Parky used to sell mixtapes of his sets at the Hacienda from the DJ booth at the beginning of a night - the tapes were usually from the previous week. Thousands of lucky punters who have copies of many of these legendary tapes will testify what a fantastic DJ Graeme Park was. From the period 1988-1992, Graeme Park was without doubt THE GREATEST HOUSE DJ IN THE WORLD. This was confirmed by the fact that he won the prestigious DMC DJ of the year award in constant succession during these years. He broke so many fantastic records at the Hacienda during this period and many other DJs (Sasha included) followed his lead.
The fact that Graeme was such a humble down to earth guy, who would always spare the time for a chat at the DJ booth, and the fact that he wasn't a great self publicist or arrogant like so many other big name DJs, makes him a great DJ in my eyes. After Parky DJs got too big for their own boots and started believing they were some kind of demi gods - as Park himself said, "I'm only a DJ playing other people's records". However that's not to take away from the fact that he was an incredible DJ during his peak years at the Hacienda & he had many a big name American DJ eating out of the palm of his hands - legends such as Humphries, Knuckles and Morales all greatly respected and admired Graeme Park.

Although post 1995, Graeme for reasons only known to himself - probably due to the money from commercial radio and the fact that he'd been there at the beginning of the dance music explosion & seen it & done it, started playing more and more obvious commerical dance music & lost his edge that made him such a great DJ. BUT the guy should be remembered as one of the finest British House DJs (if not the finest in my humble opinion) of his generation, who influenced and spawned a thousand imitators & spread the gospel of gorgeous, uplifting House Music to a generation that will never forget. RESPECT PARKY!

Ok I read the Hazy thread again and some of this is out of order imo.

What is 'poncey garage shite' all about and that he's never played a decent set etc...

I've recently listened to a lot of his sets from 91-93 and he was playing Todd Terry, Masters at Work, Morales, Knuckles, Steve 'Silk' Hurley, Underground Resistance etc.. Sure theres the odd commercial cheeser like Robin S or Degrees of Motion but generally pretty good stuff.
