Quality Mp3 Rips

I'm starting the laborious task of ripping all my tunes to mp3 but listening back to ones ive done in the past they seem a little muted/muffled compared to music that ive downloaded from p2p or mp3 music sites, obviously some of them may be cd rips so the sound quality is bound to be better than off a record but has anybody got any ripping tips????...obviously I keep the levels in the green but what about the EQing, decibel levels etc?...I find having the treble, middle and bass all on zero dB sounds a bit poor, so I have the bass turned down slightly and the treble up slightly. Maybe I'm being a bit fussy here but I'm not gonna rip them at 320kbps only to have to do them all again at a later date cos they sound a bit pants. cheers

best to bypass your mixer if u want decent rips.i connect one of my decks to my amp then to my pc.the tone controls can be turned of on my amp hence no altering of the eq so the recording sounds near as dam it to the record.
