which decks?

Maybe in a few months time hopefully, I will be looking out for a set of decks and a mixer -preferably direct drive - not top end stuff (1200/1210s/vestax etc) but for starting out (again).

any recomendations on makes/models/prices??

Andy

Yep!

Nothing else is quite the same, and the budget decks are false economy in my book - you'll want to upgrade eventually, and the cheapo decks are death to sell, you'd virtually end up giving them away. They just don't feel right either! Save for a bit longer and get some SL's. Second hand is a good idea, as they are really hard wearing - I bought my current pair (sl1210 mk2's) second hand with a mixer in 1996-ish for £450. My first set (bought in 1990) got taken in a burglary (b*stards - I had no insurance). I have never had a moment's trouble with either set.

I've said it once (or twice!) & i'll say it again STANTON STR8-150's they the new technics i tell ya! £669 a pair! (£699 with numark mixer & phones off the same link!!) Dannster had a go on a pair at my wedding & he was well impressed, just ask him lol. If you can find a shop that has a demo set & have a go, you won't believe how good they are.

I traded my Tech's in after 8 yrs for these, after a couple of goes on my mates, everyone was like 'wwwhhhooo bit of a risk innit?' But they are the dogs dangles IMHO.

EDIT: I paid £850 3 yrs ago

Talking ...

I reckon you should get some Soundlab direct drives mate - they are the dog's bollocks!

The power to the actual turntable is immense and the pitch is SOOO tight you wouldn't believe - some people actually believe they are better than more "commercial" makes and give off a unique sound that only Soundlab products can produce!!

Get them mate you won't regret it!

No, but seriousely mate get some 1210's. At the end of the day they are perfect for mixing and the quality cannot be beaten.

If ya buy some 'cheaper' decks then go onto 1210's you can instantly tell the difference. A lot of people just go for them because they are the most well known; but surely there must be a reason for this........they cannot be beaten!

The Stanton STR8-150's are good too.

I got some STR8-100's (one set down) and am really pleased with them. They were the silver ones with aluminium trim, but they dont do them anymore and the 100 range hasnt been replaced. I have no problems with torque or pick up on the 100's, and the 150's are even higher specification!.

I would say that the Str8-150's are equal or even surpass standard technics, so if you ever see a deal on them, they are well worth considering in my opinion.

Technics are the "safe" choice though I suppose.

Sirius.

DJ Mag has been saying for years that Stantons are the new kings and the ST-150's on paper are better than Technics. They come with either a straight tonearm STR8-150 or a Technics style S shaped arm.

Technics might be the industry standard at the moment, but dominance of anything has to come to an end one day. They're certainly worth checking out if they fit within your price range

The ones that Sirius has in the pic are the ones that Jonno just got. He seems dead pleased with them- i think he just regrets getting a straight arm.

When we asked around, quite a few said that these are better than the Tech ones, and they had both in the shops we went in, so i can't see why they would pull our pisser- plus they worked out a few hundred quid cheaper for the pair, which is a fair few new records. Also, a very silly but i dunno, relevent point is these decks look good, they look chunky and stylish and like they quality.

My only criticism of them really is that the little disc inner thing does not have a permanant 'home' on the actual deck, and as such it has to be kept elswhere (with our house being like a blackhole that everything gets lost in unless fixed its a nightmare), and because i play alot of old 45's they usually need it.

My STR8-100's have straight tone arms. I wasnt convinced at first, but now I think theyre ace. They dont tend to jump as much as an S-shape, and are better for scratching I believe, but I reckon S-shapes are better for your vinyl longterm.

Amelie, I hear you with the adaptor disc thing. Mine lives underneath the deck . Plus you can play your old 78's on the stantons lol. Hold down 45 and 33 and you get 78rpm mode, you get reverse, and a cool key correction utility for vocals, ie, within reason, you can change the speed of an accapella and not chipmonk it as much. When it has beats, it does tend to have mixed results on the sound quality though. I find it good occasionally .
