OT: Registering with web search engines

Righty, there's some pretty OT posts around here, so here's my contribution!

Seein' as a lot of you fellas and lasses have yer own website thingys, can anyone tell me how to SUCCESSFULLY register a site with the search engines?

I used a proggy called 'Hello Search Engines' which was supposed to automatically register it with a sh*tload, but only seems to have done it with german ones.

I've tried manually doing it on Altavista and Yahoo (about 2 months or more ago), and my site doesn't show up at all.

Ive got an application at work m8, but cant remember the name Ill let you know tommorow.

BTW When you register with Yahoo, Google etc etc its can and normally will take months for the site to appear UNLESS you have a HUGE amount of traffic. These companies have a long back-log of registries.

Cheers m8y... it was a close choice between "pay £199 and get listed straight away, or do it for free and wait an eternity".

The second, more economically viable option was chosen, and here I am still waiting for my stupid site to be listed.

It's not anyhing important, just my livelyhood!

Oh well, at least the search engines pointed me to OSA last November!

It's not exactly a porno site either, it's my frikkin boring company website.

If you really want you page to appear at the top of search lists then you have to be creative with your META tags. Quite a few search engine robots will ignore your site if you don't have decent META tags.

For a good grounding in META tags have a look at:

http://searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/meta.html

A nice free site call 'Addme' offers free submission to 18 websites, including google and altavista for the small price of link from your site.

Another one I've not tried is http://submit.freeurl.com/, let me know how this one works out.

At the end of the day you need to have a good search words in your META tags, they can make the difference of where you appear. Have a look at the META tags of the sites that appear higher than yours and that should give you a better idea.

Have a look at http://www.wordtracker.com/ to get an idea of the keywords that people are using. You can always enter "goat porn" in your META tags to get a better hit ratio
