Backing Up HD? Help!

Never actually backed up a HD before!

What do i need to do as i have an external HD with a lot of stuff i need to save and i would like to back the whole thing up, looking at 100G to start but that will increase over the next few months?

do i have to do it on DVDr's? or is there a way of Zippin the whole drive up and saving it somewhere else??
