To be fair, if its had a virus, you would be better, taking out the hard drive and copying the data you needed off it via a external hard drive caddy. Then re-formatting the drive totally, then installing windows onto it. Thats as simpleton as i can put it. sorry, if you need any assistance - i'd consult an IT support person, i can do it, but i'd want cash for my time.

Insert Windows XP CD and when prompted on bootup select "repair windows"

If it works, nice one, if not, re-install XP over itself, in doing so the files stored in the usual locations ie my pictures, my sounds should still be there as you won't have formatted the drive, just re-installed windows over itself.

Nazzer, it isn't as easy to copy data from a drive if Windows has a password as if you installed the drive as a 2nd drive in another PC, it'll not allow access to files on the original drive unless you have shared the folder with all your files in it (just from experience like, others might know an other way)

Yeah, you just have to take ownership of the folder - in permission, security, advanced, and flush all permissions,

can you boot into safe mode

To try this press F8 a lot of times while the PC boots up. This should then give you a windows menu of boot options - choose safe mode.

Sometimes it will boot into safe mode as the corrupted files and drivers don't get loaded. Then you can try to restore the PC to an earlier time. This will then allow you to copy files onto another disk or something. If system restore works then just run a virus scan when it boots up if it gets past your login screen.

to get to system restore goto:
start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore

If none of this works - it might be an idea to stick a new hard disk in and install windows XP on it then use your original disk with all your files on as just a storage disk- you should be able to access them no problems.

I'm just a bit surprised that someone on OSA actually asked for cash for a favour
