How to rip tapes ???

Prob been done loads times on here, but I still aint sure.

What do I need / do to rip tapes onto my computer ? the front of my computer has the 2 phono line in connections can I just plug straight in and do it ? or do I need some software?
all help appreciated

( got loads of old tapes to rip couple sasha, micky finn, biology 89 etc.. so you lucky peeps will also gain by helping me as will upload them into the mixes section )
