avi to DVD - I wanna watch a film I d/l'ed!

Im pooh with PCs

Iv downloaded a avi file and now I wanna burn a DVD - which I aint done before. ...I cant even play the file on my PC - well can get the sound but no picture

I have Nero - so would think I could use that to burn it.

Can someone please give me idiot proof instructions on what I need to do to play the bloody thing
