Advice on computers

Hi all, just wondering if theres anybody out there who could give me a bit of advice..... i'm looking for a computer set up but all i really want it for is to surf the web and upload and download mixes to and from here, so if any anyone could give me a bit of advice as to what i would need to do this i would be very grateful. oh and if anyone knows if there are any good deals out there at the moment that info would't go amiss aswell.

cheers all, have a nice day.

If that's all you need it for, I'd just use a laptop.

Dell sometimes do some fairly decent deals. I've always found them pretty decent, although others may have had other experiences

Warren m8....if your anything like me.........youll need at least a gig of RAM for speed and as much hard space as poss...ive filled 2 hard drives already with little room to spare in as many yrs......so id go for a nice big hard space......200 gig should do it

Gety yourself a nice big monitor too.....mine is only 15" so could do with a bit of a bigger one

Your best bet is to go into a shop and speak to someone who can help you in person, with all the best intentions in the world taking advice over the net when you havent a clue what the hell people are talking about will be totally useless.

Got to a small retailer and tell them what you want it for, by the looks of it youll need a lot of storage space to store your music and thats it. you can pick up a full PC for a couple of hundred now adays, they only start getting really expensive when you need fast PC's to run high end games, to search and download music you will not need a fast PC just a fast internet connection.

If that's all you want it for then you could buy any new bog standard pc and it'll be fine. If you intend to have a lot of software running at once (a few webpages open simultaniously, media player, DivX player etc) then you'll be better off with 1Mb ram (or at least 512mb) for a smooth unstuttering and stable system

I've done web browsing, played music and uploaded/downloaded on a shitty old laptop running XP Pro with only 128mb of ram and a crappy Duron 700Mhz processor though, it wasn't ideal, but it worked, just.

If you go into a shop, don't make it PC World, as they are rip off merchants..

Also avoid Tiny Computers, bag o wank

Everyone says that PC World are crap and I used to think that but I got my current machine form there and it was quite a good deal i think; Pentium 4 2.93 GHz, 1Gb RAM 160Gb Hard drive (bit on the small side but big enough for what I use it for) all for £600 with all the usual stuff as well dvd rewriter lcd monitor etc. so I thought it was quite good.

if you're buying from scratch, and are going to be spending a lot of time on the web, i can recommend a widescreen monitor as being a sweet investment.

20" 16x9 screens are a reasonable price these days.

i use a philips 200wc6s -

Paul the reason it was cheap is because they use the cheapest parts to be able to make an attractive package and will generally not last as long or perform as well as say a specificly built machine and tbh you could probably get that sort of package for about the same as what you paid by having it built yourself. Look at Vickys thats a mint machine and similar to yours other than a smaller hd smaller processor and no dvd writer. Had she had it built now with the difference in price parts now she could well have had wat you have now.

I have had to work on a few pc world machines and they haven't been that bad really so i wouldnt expect it to start fucking up as long as you keep it bang upto date and covered with anti virus and spy ware software.
