video to dvd (again!)

Sorry everyone i know this has been asked a gazzilion times before, but whats the recommendations for doing video to dvd?

I've looked into tv cards for me pc & they go on about 's-video in'? What is this? Is it like nomal video? s stands for scart maybes or summat

And whats the best programs for converting/cleaning up/editing the vid? Prefrebly a free torrent or d/l

Only asking as i've just got hold of a vid of 'Pink's Party' from round our end 1993 (ish), was held in what we called 'the pig sheds' at a place called Cowthorpe which is between York & Harrogate (where i'm from), I tell ya i look young! (& very battered ) AHHHhhhhhh them were the days! And i'm wanting to preserve it for posterity

could do with a 'video 2 DVD for dummies' rundown maybes too, i think butty did one but can't find it, found Welly's which mentions AVI? is this what i convert it to?

Thanks peeps

Nice one mate Have give me loads of software info there

But what about the hardware side of things? Is it scart to ??input?? or line out to line in?? Which TV cards are best? Would a bog standard ebay buy do the job as good as better one? Think i read PCI connection for the card gives shite picture quality?? So how else can i connect it if this is right?

All help apprieciated

It would depend on how much you want to spend, and the quality that you want to end up with as well as the source you wish to copy from.

An s-video (super VHS) connection can normally be found on the back of DVD players, small - round with 4 pins (like and old DIN plug but loads smaller).

Normal connection would be a composite (same as the phono leads on a turntable) - but a single yellow connector.
