CPU Fan problem, pc powering down.

I've got a PC with AMD 2400 Processor on an ASUS A7VX Motherboard.

I've replaced the heatsink fan as it was on its way out with one of these:

ARCTIC COOLING BLUE LED CPU FAN ATHLON XP 3400 SEMPTRON

Which the guy assured me it'd work ok with my system spec.

Now its installed, everytime I power up the PC, it powers down straight away, within say 2-3 seconds.

Any ideas?

I took the power source for the fan off the same socket the old fan used, maybes it needs more power?

Also, can I power up the PC without a CPU fan in place, just to make sure the PC works still, or will that fuck it totally?

Any ideas welcomed, as its me main PC and got a lot of stuff on it that I could do with accessing.

Hi Mr J,

The fan you have is fine and 100% ok to use with the processor you're running. I think that model will support XPs up to 3400mhz.

First thing I would try is to ensure that the CPU fan/cooler is seated correctly onto the processor and the retention clasps are securely fastened.

Did you power the CPU fan from the correct header on the Mobo, usually marked CPU FAN.

Did you remove all thermal paste from the top of the CPU before appying the new fan?

I would not advise you to power up the PC with a fan not present. You'll probably fry the processor in a matter of seconds.

Yeah I wouldn't do that, watched somat about that in college the other day, and an Pentium processor without a heatsink powered off after about 2 mins to save itself, the AMD chip blew up within 30 secs!!

Hence the price difference.

whatever you do do not turn the pc on without the fan connected fella trust me you'll cook an amd in no time, then run very hot anyway.

what psu have you got ie wattage? also make sure the fan is the right way up, i know it sounds funny, but ive nearly put it on the wrong way round, easy to tell there is always a direction arrow telling which way it should be faced. Other than that it might be a faulty fan have had them.

also if you have a spare power supply slot, power it straight from the psu do not take it from the motherboard as it can short it out.

I spoke to a mate briefly and he said you power up the PC without a fan in place for upto 30 seconds max, I didn't even attempt it lol

It was seated fine, I took it off, took the processor out and re-seated that, and then put the new fan back, still doing the same thing.

It's getting power from the same source as old fan, so can't see why it won't have it.

I cleaned the old fan and stuck that back, and its all working fine with that fan, I might just get the exact same type of fan again and see how that goes, dunno if the new ones using more power?

Also have me trusty desktop fan pointing at the pc with its case off as backup lol

Sempron have now replaced Athlons as they are making Athlons obsolete, might be an idea checking if your mobo will take a Sempron. Also, check the chip on top of your new processor, make sure it ain't chipped or looks burned out around the edges.

Have you checked that the heatsink is flush with the core of the cpu?
Even if the cradle which attached the hsf is out a smidge at one side then the machine will power down.
PS most modern mobos have a thermal cut out system which prevents the cpu overheating and causing any damage to the chip

Yeah,your fan should be blowing ONTO the heatsink. Easy way fo find out - hold a piece of paper over the top of it and it shoud stick to the fan

I don't like the way the new heatsink fits on the cpu.

The old one sits and locks better and has 4 screws to secure it, the new one only has the springy clips.

It is deffo the right way, but as I say it's not having it.

Have mailed the dude I got it off on eBay and waiting to see what he says...

Ah so you got a new heatsink as well? I'd guess that it's not on properly - it needs to be touching your CPU. Quite close won't do, there needs to be a direct contact

not much to add to what everyone els has said but why not try reseating your original heatsink n fan and see if it works if it doesnt then maybe you have fuckked the cpu allready
also did u reapply any conductive paste or did the new heatsink allready have some paste applied ?

The gear you want is arctic silver - just a tiny amount (about the size of a grain of rice) on the centre of the core and the pressure of the heatsink will spread the paste out evenly - remember to much is just as bad as none at all!

yep always put artic silver on my cpu's much much better than that horrible rubbery stuff
