when a new record is produced and before it goes in to mass production they release these steel discs with a plastic film on. they dont last very long (only a couple of plays) what are they called its not a master copy as myk suggested its something like- acetate or dub plates,

There is a part of the production called "Dubplating" which as it suggest produces a Dubplate...is that what you mean I wonder...
