Reason 2.5

I pride myself on being able to learn most software packages quickly (with the exception of 3DSMax which is a sod) but this one has got me stumped!!!

Anyone got any advice on where to start learning how to use this awesome program?

Youre right with 3dsMax!! lol. Bit of a big bugger innit.

However, as with 3dsMax, its all depending on how far you want to go.

Reason can be as complex or simplistic as you want it to be. For example Ive had the program ages and have never even got into 'complex routing' and using matrix's as a echo delay and all that sort of stuff.

If your after any particular questions answering just jot em down here and Ill see if I can answer them. For example, are you trying to play sounds with a hardware synth? becuase you need to set your synth channel to match your 'chanel' on the reason audio settings box. I use Channel 5, and play channel 5 on my synth to operate the sounds within Reason. Also, if you look on the left side of the sequencer window where the 'track' names are, the one which has a round logo of a midi port is the 'active' sound module on the software, so if you have a drum module on but wanna play a synth but you are still getting drum sounds, check for the round logo! lol.

I too used to pride myself on perseverance with programs, but with reason, once you grasp the initial concept its absolutely piss easy, trust me. Its far far far easier than Logic Pro audio and Cubase used to be, and if you really want a head peck, take a look at the Reaktor and Vaz+ programs where you have to build your own synths!!!!!.

Its easiest to just keep the instruments facing front initially, dont worry about pressing the TAB key!, you dont relly need to unless you are wanting to do something advanced.
My tip:
You create a Mixer first, then personally I add a few effect racks, then a drum module, then a synth or sampler. The routing takes care of itself when you do that.
If you just add a synth right up at the top of the rack, you probably wont hear anything, even if you add a mixer underneath - in this case you would have to 'wire it up' when you hit the tab key and look at the backs of the instruments. You draw cables from the ports with your mouse.

Hope this helps somewhat,

Sirius.
