Nasty Virus, Need Help, big Time Alright folks, I have a nasty virus, and need some help. Where do I start..... I'm on XP (Microshaft) I was online last week, where I was on messenger ect... I was not downloading or anything. My PC went all kind of slow, so I reboot, as you do. On reboot, my pc went in to like a disc check thing, which i've never seen before, doing tasks 1 of 3 ect........ When my PC loaded up after that, the date was back at june 2003, and when i went to change it, I get the error message saying : rundll32.exe - Bad Image The application or DLL c:\windows\system32\IMM32.DLL is not a valid windows message. Please check this against your installation diskette. My sound drivers are gone, and when i go to my computer, my CD ROM and Burner are not present (Drivers Gone Looks Like). I am still able to get online, so I ran live update on my nortons 2003, done a full virus scan, and it's found nothing. I also tried to get in to properties on my computer, to turn off system restore, however, i just get the same error message as above. I tried doing an online scan at Panda and http://housecall.trendmicro.com, however get an error message : Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly. I have shitloads of mp3's and files on my PC, and would not like to loose them. Is there anyway round this without formating my hard drive??? I could always send all the files I need to an external device Via USB... Tony In Glasgow.

Doesn't sound like a virus to be honest. Is the version of XP you have Home Edition, or Pro, and more to the point is it a legit version or the 'well known' one that you can download. If it's not got a valid product key, then I'd start there, get a key changer hack and change the product code to a valid one (corp edition) If it is legit, stick the XP Pro CD in and see if you can do a restore/fix, loading some files back in. If that fails, you can install the operating system over itself, and still retain all your files and most settings, small things like paths and shortcuts may need re-adding though, but you shouldn't lose any data. A good idea though is to have 2 HDD's and on 1, have the O/S, on t'other, have your data, and if the O/S fails completely you'll never lose any data. Try re-installing your drivers and check the microsoft site for updates, providing it's all legit.

It's XP home I have, and it's all legit. I think i only got a restore disc, not an actual copy of XP when I bought my PC. Can you talk me through on what to do. Tony.

 Not sure on XP Home to be honest, but if you've lost CD Rom drivers, best bet there is to go to the (CD ROM) manufacturers website and download drivers specific for that drive, install them and see how you get on with the restore disc, failing that, if it's under any kind of warranty, call them and request their help, although most places thesedays tend to have you ring a premium rate line for software advice, which is crap, you might as well ring a wank line, at least you'd get satisfaction out of the call ![]()

| You could try..start bar - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore..then restore back to another day from before this happened!I aint no expert but this seems to work ok for most things!!!
