Broadband connectiion probs

Help needed!!
I am using freeserve broadband which is works ok for about 5 minutes then it stops (i.e. no activity lights in connection icons) I click a link nothing happens for about 30 seconds then hey presto we are back running again then another 5 mins and everything stops again this is REALLY annoying.
Any ideas what the problem could be?? I have reinstalled my modem, tried running without a firewall but no difference.I have downloaded the MTU adjustment tool from BT's site but thats not helped either. If I am downloading a file, say for 15 mins, it's ok for that length of time but just normal surfing and it keeps happening. The dickheads at freeserve told me to switch off my modem and puter for 5 minutes, but of course that never helped!!

Anyone got any tips?? Please.

I use a router for my DSL connection and havent used the modems, the router has a cut off for the connection after a certain period of time and it drops the connection if I set it to 0 then it keep the connection up permanently which is what ive done.

Can you get into the settings for the modem to see if it has an idle time setting and if so set this to 0 see if that helps

if not can you try your modem on another persons PC who has DSL see if its the modem thats faulty.

You could also try using someone elses modem on your PC to see if its your ISP

Once youve done this youll nail where the problem lies and sort it from there

If your still having problems ask on the forum on www.adslguide.org you dont need to register i dont think

its going to be somthing in the settings thats dropping the connection, but at the same time ADSL does drop its connection but not for long it could be your ISP working on there servers as well, they will fob you off with bullshit though they always do and ive tyet to know an ISP that actually takes responcibility when there in the wrong !

I have just found out that when everything 'stops' on the web page I can still check and download any e mails in outlook express!?
Does this mean it could be my browser that is at fault?? I am using ie6 and have tried the 'repair' tool in add/remove programs.
Cheers for any advice
