| Wattage!? I should know this. Im thinking of getting a little radio for the kitchen......one of those portable type things with built in speakers, CD deck, cassete and FM radio. Im looking at 20 - 30 quid tops. Now, Im used to getting not much less than 300 watts (!!) power for my gear upstairs....but these little bleeders are only like "2 x1.0 watts" which sounds *rather* weedy to me. The unit doesnt have to stonk out, just be pleasantly listenable - but Id hate it if it was tinny and distorting the bass like a limp lettuice. Do you reckon 2x1.0 watts would suffice for a kitchen?. Ta, Sirius. |

| Im just thinking of nipping down argos......lol.....they dont tend to plug stuff in. Come to think of it, its pot luck what they have plugged in at Comet too..... Good idea though, although they will think Im taking the piss - nobody in there right mind thats dedicated to music would touch one with a bargepole! lol. Id be getting a 250watt mega 'bread bin shaker' standard one, but they are a tad too much money. Sirius. |

| I had similar thoughts ages ago when I wanted some sounds in my kitchen, but I had an old Radio/Cass/CD player, which was quite good, it's years old and I'd been using that until early this year when it packed up, nothing could coax it back to life So, my kitchen was quiet for a few weeks which I have to say was a nightmare, I like sounds, all the time if possible, not loud, but there has to be background music of some description. I'm one of those people who has to have music on low before I can get to sleep, and it's nice to hear if you happen to wake up throughout the night/day (I work nights) instead of that deadly silence, also I find if there's music on, my mind doesn't tend to go into overdrive mode, thinking whilst trying to get to sleep is a nightmare.. Anyway, back to the point, I upgraded my edit suite (I have 2 studios) and used to rely on an Aiwa midi hi-fi for monitoring - which has CD/Cass/Radio/Minidisc all built in, and I just shoved that in the kitchen, which was a relief as there's nothing worse than a quiet kitchen, I'm sure even Ainsley Harriot would agree there ![]() Why not see if you've an old midi hi-fi knocking around, you might have chucked one in the attic when you bought newer gear etc? I must learn to start throwing things away, or at least selling them, as I hoard far too much! |

| 1w is gonna sound crappy fella, normal cheap-ass PC speakers (u know the small plastic kind) average about 4w per channel and they still sound shite! Look for something with like 10w per channel or upwards ![]()

| Nah Mate! What ya want is one of them speaker and amps that michael J Fox had a go of, in Back to the Future, you know the amp that goes up to 10, that way the volume will sufice also if your neighbours get on your nerves you could crank it up to No 2 and Blast out a dividing wall....Whilst not sounding like a limp lettuce..... Cheers Acestu as ever!

| Cheers guys. My gut instinct was that 2 x 1 watts was a bit pezzy. Myk, Ive just had a look at the Phillips.......it says 5 watts on your link, but the same model at Comet (3 quid more) is reported at 2x1 watts. I think this PMPO and RMS rating is confusing distinguishing things between sites. It was gonna be a sort of bonus prezzy for my mum you see, she likes the radio on in the kitchen (almost all the time). The current one is a second hand one from about 1990 and is getting a bit ropey to be honest. It plays tapes too though. I could get just a radio, but she often says she would like to play CD's and tapes....as my mum and dad have no hifi unit at all. Im wondering now whether to ditch the present I was gonna get and spend a tad more on a CD/Cassete/Radio combo thats higher than 5 watts. Its gonna have to be one or the other. Mind you, my dad let slip to my brother yesterday that it was pretty knackered, so I bet he goes and buys one and all now!!!! lol.We make a point of not telling each other so theres no risk of scamming an idea of the other! Its usually the case we get the same thing though! hahaha. Ah well. 2 days to go and I still havent got any prezzies! Oh dear...... Sirius. |
