Setting up FTP Servers????

Hi again,

I know Ive asked this before, but I never managed it last time - or previously, lol. I think last time a complication was that I was a client on a home network with shared internet access - I dont have that anymore - mines the master.

What I want to do is set up a FTP server on my machine. I have Bulletproof and Serv-U programs to go at, not yet installed. What I dont get so far, is that becuase an FTP goes off your IPaddress - what does everyone do who's on broadband and has a 'dynamic' ip address?

Obviously I want it to be free, just set up on my machine without having to rely on any other service, just a little something to share files with thats always 'up' when my machines on.

What are the dangers of FTP's on your machine?, how do you sort out firewalls and virus scanners for it to run smoothly but safely? how can I issue an address if the address will change everyday?

If anyone can answer, please explain it like Im 4 years old. Dont worry about sounding condescending! lol.

Cheerio

Sirius.

I know I should install the programs and try it out - but I dont wanna risk doing anything wrong or starting off on the wrong foot. lol.

its well easy mate, i did it in 5 mins the other night when my pc died and had to format

used serve-4-u cos its dead easy, most broadband ip's dont change that often (i dont think, well mine only changes when i get cut off for not paying bill) so alls u need to do is load serve-4-u (got a cracked copy here) and then use the wizard and its done, put ur IP in, put the port u wanna run it off and ur away

then set up user accounts with diff access levels and yer sorted...

if yer IP changes regular the best thing to do is get a free dynanic dns service from www.mine.nu then u would have an address for example sirius.is-a-geek.org (lol) and then u would enter ur IP on their site and its like a divert sorta thing then the name is ur IP

as for firewalls ive just put zone alarm back on and all i did was load the ftp thing up and allowed it access etc, virus checker, u can probs configure with it but dont thik u wanna be scanning every single file u get cos u will know who u get em off most of the time

one last thing, dont allow anonymous access

shout me on messenger tomorrow bud if u want a hand

Right, Im getting pretty frustrated with this lot already.

Ive registered with dyndyns.org via the link you provided above, set up an account and filled in an 'account form'. Done all the email reply malarky business etc beforehand.

Ive installed Serv-U ftp server program and followed its setup instructions, providing a login name you must have to access the folder/server I have allocated.

What I dont understand is:

1) what somebody needs to type to see my folder - I filled the form in but cant see it anymore. I assume its in the following format "myftp.dyndns.org" and not "myftp@dyndyns.org".

2) where does this info go in my program setup? It asks for/is suited for a numeric adresss....

3) when I try and look at eg *ftp://myftp.dyndns.org in my web browser I cant get through....or is it *ftp//myftp@dyndns.org - either way it doesnt work. Even when I 'login as' my password name I setup in the FTP program.

4) upon filling in the 'account form' of my name I want to use via dyndns site - it did it, but kept returning to a log in box for the dyndns site straight away - so has it done it (processed the details)?

My Serv-u program settings for 'Domain' tab include:

Name:

Domain IP address: (which wont allow the full length of my dyndns name/address)

Domain Type: "Store in .ini"

Security: "Normal FTP - No SSL/Tsl sessions"

Port Number: 21

Enable Dynamic DNS: (off)

Im lost now, and pretty demoralised.

Thanks

Sirius.

ur ip address going in serve 4 u

once u reged with that dynamic dns ur done mate, u use the wording rather than number to access ur ftp

u need to set up some other accounts and grant them access to certain DIR's that u want them to and give diff permissions

lol u got a bit too far ahead of urself mate, dont worry about not getting access via IE cos it never works, everyones uses clients so they would type in

ip sirius.dynsgo.org
port 21
user johns_ar
pass *****

then they connect and drop into the directory u set as home for them

Name: CALL IT WHAT U WANT, SIRIUS MUSIC SERVER ETC

Domain IP address: PUT IN WHAT UR IP ADDRESS IS RATHER THAN WORDING, serve4u runs off domain IP rather than the dynamic, the dynamic is like web forwarding sort of thing....

Domain Type: "Store in .ini"

Security: "Normal FTP - No SSL/Tsl sessions"

Port Number: 21

Enable Dynamic DNS: (off)
that will do it mate, mines set up the same as that and works nicely

lol.

I know I tend to steam in with things - its the endless fannying about and terminology which gets on my tits, and websites which dont confirm whether what youve done has worked or not, lol.
I just wanna download some stuff, run it. Anything else on top is a nightmare, hahaha. I think I did pretty well though.

However, it still aint working. Ive set it up as above - I may aswell reveal the details, cos you need a pass to get in:

I registered as epichouse.dyndns.org - you can guess the password, its not too far from here, lol.
I have SmartFTP client, but I get:

" Resolving host name epichouse.dyndns.org...
No such host is known.
Connection closed.
Resolving host name epichouse.dyndns.org...
No such host is known.
Connection closed."

So its a right royal fukup isnt it?.

Give me an hour or two and Ill be as bald as a coot.

See ya bud

Sirius.
