router

movin into my new uni pad on fri and there's three of us all wantin seperate internet lines for our comps.......

we've orderered broadband through NTL at £17.99 which aint bad......and was told that in order for that to be the only cost we would have to split the connection by buying a router or sumet.......this i then need to install myself.

so does anyone know the best place to get one of these? how much approx it'll be? and what i need to do with it when i get it? hehe

cheers for the help again mateys

Ive got a DG814 netgear router mate, its a peace off piss to configure and if you need instructions I can write it down.

The router its self should be £150.00 but you can get cheap ones off the net for about £100.

Comes with a built in NAT ( networ address translator ) this takes the IP address from your ISP and seperates it into 256 private IP addresses that it gives each computer.

Its a shit hot firewall because if anyone tries to hack you they only get to the router and cant get to any PC's as the IP are all private not public.

Youll need a network card in each PC to connect them to the router. Its capable of 2 meg connection and you dont need to bother about crossed or straight cat5 cable as it detects it and you can use any you want.

Loads of gadgets port forwarding etc.

For any router your looking at about 70.00 upwads but to be honest for the extra protection + simplicity youll not go wrong with this little bugger

You can even set everything to automatic, so itllk get the IP address from the ISP for you and also it will also search for there active DNS servers as well all youll need to do is put in your account name and password supplied by your ISP.

Hi Danny

I have a similar router to the one mentioned previously. I have the "Netgear Cable/DSL Prosafe Firewall Router/Print Server - FR114p". Bought mine a couple of months ago from Simply (www.simply.co.uk) for around £78.

It also all the necessary features of the previously mentioned Firewall and should serve you well. It's quite easy to set up. I also use NTL Broadband from my set top box in the living room.

I have two PC's connected to this Firewall at present which are based in two rooms. Basically, I can't recommend this piece of kit highly enough and it's at a really good price!.

Give me a shout if you have any trouble or want more advice.

Phil

cheers for the help cam and phil

andy (johns_ar), we were hoping that we cud get around paying £18 each a month by getting a router......also by getting a router we would be able to afford an upgrade in broadband speed.......

btw....the options are:

150k £17.99 per month
600k £24.99 per month
1MB £34.99 per month

the girls are both set on NTL so we have to go with one of these three options......would the £25 option suffice? and would it still be a reasonably fast download speed if we were to get either of the £80ish routers that both cam and phil have suggested?

cheers

av u tried bulldogdsl.com, think cam posted about em before and theyre cheap as, u would get more speed for same coin

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...&ProductID=573
and
http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop...&ProductID=622

Nothing wrong with those at all mate!. Save yourself £40 in the process too. Seem to have the same list of features as the Netgear ones, and D-Link are a fairly reputable company.

I just got the Netgear one as it was recommended to me by my tutor!.

Happy shoppin'!....

Phil

Danny like i said the other day mate your gonna be miles better of if you go for the biggest speed ya can get because if the others are anything like you they will be online most of the time and it will affect you download speeds.

As for a router i think Jay can get em pretty cheap he uses CCL Computers

Where he got all your parts for ya comp mate

Andy

like ive mentioned to yer andy, its harsh coz these two girls i'm living with both want the cheap 150k option which is annoying me coz i know it wont be what i want.......unfortunately i'll have to go along with it as i dont want to be making enemies with my new flatmates if yer get me.......

of course i nearly said to her that i'd get my own line.....but i knew that wud be selfish.......i was fine last year paying £17.99 a month on my own.........

their argument is that we will also have to share costs of renting a washing machine (which again i dont see the need in having, but hey everyones different).......thats university life thou innit, having to learn to get on with different people......

i'll let you know what we intend to do as soon as i know, cheers

where abouts in the UK are you ?

Like johns_ar said Ive seen bulldogdsl and you can get a 1 meg connection for £25.00

If you get the 150KB DSL itll be a lot slower than ADSL and split 3 ways youll be looking at modem speed.

If they just browse the internet to look at pretty photos and shop on ebay youll get all the bandwidth for downloading tunes so youll be ok, but if there decent women then they 2 will be downloading tunes so id suggest youll need a faster connection.

512KBS is enough to service 3 people going lower than that and you might find it slow especially at peak times.
