Lol - another question.........Hdd.

Right, as you know my PC is going tits up.

What Ive done is nicked my dads old hard disk with WinMe on it and took mine out.

It didnt like it at first, it couldnt detect any hard disks.

I had this before when 10GB went missing on my hard disk capaciity, so I knew what to do. I have this 'ultrabios' thing on my machine, and when my PC was delivered, my brother upon diagnosis searching realised the long plug on the motherboard was going into IDE slot three rather than the IDE1. He swapped it to IDE1 and hey presto, job was a good one.

However, all this time since, it said "ultrabios is not installed as there is no disk attached" , but it worked OK.

Anyway, I put my dads hard disk in IDE3 and it worked, ultrabios and all. Thats how Im typing now! lol. I wanna upgrade Me to XP if I have to keep it for the time being, or I may buy a hard disk tommorow afternoon.
Eitherway, I was wondering what you need to do to put a second hard disk in (my old one with winXP on the C: partition) so I could transfer whats left of my contents to the new/dads disk.

Is this possible, or easy?

Cheers

The local clown.

You may not be able to answer me in time, but when youre buying a hard disk drive, whats the difference between

HITACHI Deskstar 60Gb 7200/100 £57

Maxtor 60 Gb 7200/133 £59

yeah, 60gb is the capacity, 7200 I guess is the rpm, but whats the 100/133 diference?, and will it matter which one I buy?

Im going in half an hour.........can anyone advise?

Sirius.

Go with the Maxtor, they make better drives period.

The 100/133 is the ATA transfer rate, basically its the peak speed in Megas a second of data that can be transfered by the drive. In actual fact there very little spedd difference if any. But still the Maxtor is a better choice coz their drives are great

I'll try and answer you previous question when I get 5 mins mate, but I'm pushed for time myself at the mo m8. Just wanted to answer this one before you made the wrong buy

Well, so far so good!.

I decided to splash out and get an 80gb Maxtor133 with 8mb cache, after all it was only about 12 quid more than the 60gb......
We got both drives in, I havent a spare bay for the extra hdd so its just currently sat freely inside my case.

The thing is, its currently installed on the IDE slot 1 (again) which doesnt run Ultrabios100 for some reason becuase 'theres no drives attached' and also even though my old hard drive is the 'slave' it still put that one in the windows explorer first (Ie on my old disk I had c: d: e: f: g: (cd) and now the new drive has started at h: i: j: k: where I split it into four).

Windows is now on drive H. This is freaking me out cos Im so used to having it on C:. Its all in the wrong order somehow. Anyway, at least its on.

Question is, what exactly is UltraBios? Can I just repatch the chord to IDE3 now? will it recognise it?. Do I need Ultrabios, is it damaging my system with it not running?.

As for the hard disks' order, I suppose Ill have to get used to it.

Cheers

Ps, this bloody keyboard thing is really pissing me off now.

I type a paragraph, realise Ive missed a word out or spelt sommet wrong, go back to correct it and the next letter dissapears sort of overwriting what you already put as you type.

Me and Digthe music get this quite often, whats the scoop with that?.
