56k aint that bad if yer just want to be posting on here etc and not downloading tunes and music.....

plug the phone line into the back of the pc and then get urself an internet disc (AOL, BT etc) from currys or somewhere, the supermarkets have them as well

56k is the speed of the connection. If you use a normal phoneline connection then you will have a slow internet connection but if you only want it to post on boards then it should be fine.

Some of us are manic downloaders of porn, music, warez and films... for this band of reprobates a faster internet connection is required. ADSL or Cable are the two choices. ADSL is high speed Internet over the normal telephone wire and Cable is via the cable TV providers like NTL. You can expect to pay anywhere between £19 - £30 a month for this type of access.

To put that into perspective... a 20 second download on DSL/Cable can take 30 minutes on 56k.

You mentioned something about Journels for Uni? What do you mean? What do you want to do with them? Create or just download?

My advice is to call it a PC or desktop PC. If you ask peeps for a "server" they will give you a top end machine that will cost you an arm and a leg.

If you feel like a n00b with PC's then you may be better looking for something around the £700 mark from PC World. They help ya install it and give you lots of post-sales support.

If your going to buy one then prepare yourself for questions like.. what are you going to use it for, etc etc.

For example, if you want to play modern games on it then you need decent sound and graphics which push the price up. If you want a bog standard PC which lets you type and browse the web then you can get away with a much cheaper PC. I wouldn't be surprised if you can get one for less than £500 that would do the job for you.

How much do you want to spend and how much can you spend?

yeppers my dads ISP is Freeserve and it seems quite good and reasonably priced

Once you go broadband (DSL/cable) you'll never want to 56k again.. or as they are known in the gaming community... HPB's (High Ping Bastards).
