Vintage Synths

Help,

I am after getting hold of a couple of old synths, as used by artist like the prodigy, dream frequency etc,

things like the Yamaha SY75, i want them to reproduce those rave synth type effects eg, terrorize uses some nice sounds in, its just a feeling,

Any help on this would be muchly appreciated,

Cheers

Gaz

HEY!!!. Get in line buddy! .

Ive dreampt of this for years........Is there a definative list of synths used by these artists back in the day? What they use now dunt mean nowt, they've prolly changed em since 1991...
Im particularly after DreamFrequency, Prodigy, NRG, Terrorize, SyKick, Njoi and FSOL/ Orbital sounds etc lol.

Have you a list of thier 1991/92 gear DJ Britalian?

Btw, these days its rarely the case you need to buy hardware.....there are some fantastic emulations out there now, infact if you knew what they were originally, and baught an excellent soundcard and a huge set of virtual synths (ie BIG money) you probably wouldnt need hardware - which will be BIG BIG BIG money and very expensive to repair any damages.

I know its very hard (I struggle a lot with it) but with a decent software to go at with a good extensive sound engine in it, you could get the old sound theory books out and make them.....lol.

Ive tried in years gone by, sat there for hours on end tweaking parameters and wavetables etc only to get a fraction the way there, but its possible to get 70 percent right i reckon. Its just hard work. Check out Time&Space CD's and Reason Refills, and Native Instruments's site for starters....Original synth hardware of this type is very expensive as far as I know cos they are stil saught after by the likes of us!.

Just an idea, anyway.

btw, have you a list????

Cheers

Sirius.

I have a Roland Alpha Juno 1 which was used on lots of old tunes

It's most famous for the 'hoover' noise (mentasm, charly etc.) but there are lots of familiar noises on there

I picked mine up for about £150 from a second hand shop, I gather this was a fairly good buy, but they're not usually much more than that, it's a good little synth to buy for starters, can easily be hooked up on MIDI as well

have to agree with the above about the emulaors - its expensive business buying a synth - u might be better off trying to track down the samples or patches of the noises you want

for example the Korg M1 has the definitive "Italian" piano noise (IMHO)

and a lot of Casio synths from the late 80s have the classic "bombscare/neon" organ stab etc

Lol at Sirius, soz mate, to be honest i want the cheapest option, i dont have a list of synths used by artists back in the day, i just was wondering what they actually used

I have downloaded a few demos of soft synths but still cant find a decent one, any recomendations??

I have made all my tunes so far with a Yamaha PSR620, which by the way has a very nice grand piano & bright piano for those lovely piano breakdowns, i am also using a yamaha cs1x which is fairly modern in todays technology,

lol, i have the time frequency - real love picture sleave & i have tried to see what synth he is using on the front cover, cant see it with my eyesight

Any suggestions on top soft synths??

Cheers guys

LoL at Britalian! .

Youre not as sad as me are you m8?, I used to watch Dance Energy, Hitman and Her, and TopOfThePops back in the day - the scantily clad nubile dancer gyrating away was coming second to me trying to squiz the logo's on the keyboads!!!. lol. Most of the time (youve prolly noticed) they stick black gaffa tape over them so anoraks like myself cant see.

To be honest m8, although some sounds on those old tunes must have been 'out the box' inbuilt sounds on the old hardware, its more than likely a lot were crafted after a lot of tweaking. The old keyboards are very simplistic in editing sound parameters I reckon, which has the advantage of being simple to use(ish), however its a ballache when you cant carve out the sounds you want cos of a lack of knobbage and knowhow!.

I remember a VSTi I had, cant recall the name, it was black and featured a virtual keyboard...it was one of the early softsynths, there were some ruff sounds in that prebuilt. Along an old softsynth tip, I used to like that Rainbow one.

You can get a Pro5, SH101, MiniMoog, Moog Modular, FM7, 303,909,808 etc synths for VST compatible sequencers pretty easily, and are quite faithful to the hardware in many cases apparently.

On the whole, I must admit its hard to find the "ruff bastard dirty ass sounds" we require on softsynths. Ive heard Absynth by native instruments is good, but I havent used it (yet - its on its way down lol). Somebody told me about a relatively new set of softsynths to, each module has a different name like 'argon' or sommet and theres sommet like 5 cd's worth of just bass samples!. I wish I could remember what it was now. Its just too big to download if you find it *ahem*on the net though even with broadband!!!.

Have you used PropellerHeads' Reason? Check out the 'refil's you can get!!!! Its insane. However, like sample Cd's, there are a lot of just 'preloop' pattern samples and no real substance to 'real' playable synth sounds. There are some excellent refils available though, I really recommend a try of Reason and a stack of refils before you spend ANY money.

Apparently, in Reason 2.5 theres a new Vocoder module and a new effect unit which 'beefs up' the sounds, if they are still running the trailer for it on propellerheads website you should check it out it sounds killer .

Reason is the daddy for me (at the minute anyway), but the quest for those elusive grinding dirty ass sounds does still continue.......

See ya

Sirius.

Check out

http://www.propellerheads.se/home/fr...3/frankpop.htm

Especial intrest to me and you is the 'unison' effect module. Im in anticipation of eventually getting my grubby mits on it.

You wont find anything better for your money than this baby in my opinion.

Check out the link!.....You WILL cream your jeans. .

The thing you mustnt foget is that once you have the gear (any gear, hardware or soft) its a whole new ballgame understanding how to use it properly. I still dont know even an 8th of how to use reason to full potential yet, it takes great skill to tweak effect units and maximise your track and thats after a good arrangement and sounds and song!. Its no piece of cake whatever you get.

Be quick with the link! Im not sure how long its staying up for!. Its NOT on the propellerheads main site from what I can see.........
