My PC is really shit.....help

right me pc is really slow.....

its pretty old but it shouldnt be this shit....

heres the spec

12gb hard drive, only 4.66bg used

Running Windows 98 Second Edition
Authentic AMD
AMD-K7 Processor
128 MB RAM

I dont run a lot of programs at once ever.....

At the moment i am listening to a tune in real player and if i type to fast here, or when i press the post button the sound will jerk like mad cos the memory is being used by something else.....this may be a real player problem i think?

its beginning to get on me tits big time and i have been told that it may be because athalon ones didnt get installed with a powerful enough fan and it might be getting too hot and therefore slowing down? how true is this?

also would some extra RAM help to speed it up yer reckon and how much does it cost?

Only intel cpu's slow them selves down if they over heat, not amd's.
Do the obvious things like defrag your hard-drive then get ftp://ftp.pcworld.co.nz/pcworld/file...tupcpl_exe.zip that file.
Open and run it to see what rubbish is loading on startup and delete all the crap (if u dont know what half of it is then post it here and I'll tell u what u can safelly remove)
How long since your last format? when I ran w98 I had to format every month or two as w98 would crap out real bad after that amount of time.
Also get http://www.outertech.com/download.ph...5169ecd20ca654 cachman as that helps a lot on w98

More ram will deffo help you out. At the moment your system will be paging lots of memory to disk. The slow down your experiencing is more than likely the system paging back and forward.

In the short term increase the size of your pagefile and in the long term get some more RAM or fork out for a nice new PC

Yes mate, you do need more RAM for a start, mine had 256meg and I still have memory problems (well, me puter does anyway!)

Here's a page I use all the time to check what I can sefely removed from startup memory:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup...artup_full.htm

It's quite a big page, so it might take a while to download if you're on dial-up, but it's worth it.

If you don't fancy running a 3rd party proggy to see what's in your startup memory, do this:

start/run...

enter MSCONFIG and press OK

Now click the 'startup' tab, you can scroll down that list to see what sh*te is running in memory.

Refer to the webpage above to find the programs - what they are, and whether or not it is safe to delete them from startup.

Just 'untick' the ones you don't want.

You'll be asked to re-boot your machine, do it, and a window will come up telling you that you're using selective startup. You can disable this window with the tick box, but I'd recommend leaving it on for a few days to remind you that you've disabled some start-up progs.

You'll be surprised what crap you've got running, but for ****'s sake CHECK THE LIST ON THE WEBSITE, and DON'T DISABLE ANYTHING WHICH YOU AREN'T SURE of...

For example, DON'T disable any of these:

CTFMON
SCANREGISTRY
TASKMONITOR
SYSTEMTRAY

Good luck.

Although it doesn't show on your system resources, disabling any screen savers and windows wallpaper should also free things up a bit - just have 'none' selected for both of these, unless yoiu REALLY need that fake topless Britney on your desktop! :p
