help with avi/mov/mpeg movie editing

you know in photoshop etc when you can change contrast, curves etc of images is there software that lets you do that with movie files??????? thx very much in advance peeps

i use a proggie called VLC .. made by sum French students!!! anyways, you can stream over networks and the web straight from your PC...but thats not important...with this app you can use filters yes...like contrast and stuff (so im told) i just use it for SVCD playback.
