plenty of questions there, first thing i'd suggest though is decide what you're having on there, get the content sorted..decide on a layout.

all the tools, webspace etc are the easy part but if you haven't got a good idea to start with the you'll not get very far.

so what's the site going to be about?

its not easy mate - it took 2-3 years to get even a ok amount of visitors to the site (2-300 unique visitors a day) which u need to even think about having a forum otherwise u just end up talkin 2 yaself on it, i didnt know n e think about website design when i started mine (n still pretty much dont) i just learnt what i had 2 to get by (like everythink in life lol) and blagged it, its hard work but it is very rewarding, it costs a lot of money n all especially if the site starts getting busier and uses more webspace n bandwith n that. and i think the thing ive learnt most since starting the forum up is how to deal and communicate with people - i think thats the most important thing about a forum n its the reason y so many of em go tits up, coz of the way they r run. im so trained up in it now n have had so much experience of dealing with diffrent situations i rekon i could take over that kofi annans job as the chief un peacekeeper ive been thru it all lol. i know one thing tho its the best thing ive ever done and if ya have the passion for the music the time the patience and the will to learn then i say go for it.

ben, were you thinking of a forum or a 'normal' website..you didn't say.

forums are hard work but your usual run of the mill website can have low maintenance..and are pretty easy to get going.

A basic site only needs you to learn some HTML (you can use an editor but its cheating and you can't correct automated mistakes). If you want a web board then you have to learn about CGI and a programing language like Perl, PHP or VB. There are a lot of free CGI web boards available that you can download and run with minimum effort but a knowledge of the programing language would be beneficial but not necessary.

Just do a google search for "HTML Tutorials" and arm yourself with notepad. The only way to learn. If you want a site like Mr B's then you'll have to get a bit more advanced. I suggest trying something like PostNuke because PHP will be easier to learn than this VB beast butty uses.

Have a look at http://www.webreference.com . There are a stack of tutorials from HTML to Javascript to XML to Perl.
