Try registering with www.no-ip.com

It should find your IP for you there, then you can set up a re-direct so you don't have to give your IP to people, e.g. I could set up

mikesftp.no-ip.com

This is then the address you give out to anyone you want to be able to use your FTP (along with a username and password)

Sounds alright, but is it safe?. Im a right paranoid fekker at times -
How do I know if I give them all my personal details and my ip address they cant say peek in on whats going on, pass this info to others for money, build a profile on me for the C.C.S etc.....

I dont see an easy way of totally retracting the subscription either, what happens if I decide to stop having a server? Can they still use my details to thier own means, what are the possible flaws in this information in thier hands? - non (ie dont panic its perfectly safe) or some (ie hackers, people poking around my machine forever more etc).

I dont know what Im talking about, but I dont just like signing my life away without understanding all the possibilties of my actions....

Other than that, it looks good .

Sirius.

If you aren't sure about the security Sirius don't go for the registering option. Do I remember you saying you get assigned a dynamic address from your ISP? If so just let the "client" have the address as and when you need him to. If you register with one of these name services you usually have to install some software that registers your PC with them (No-IP / DNS2Go or whoever you have registered with etc) each time you boot up.

I take it you've convinced yourself that the FTP itself is working OK? If you're mega concerned about other people tapping in to your FTP server you should be able to get the IP addy of the "client" and pop this in your firewall software or FTP server software so that it only allows this one person to use the FTP. Meaning that the FTP service on your 'puter is invisible to the rest of us.
