Bastarding WindowsXP $%&*!!!!!!

I got windows XP via a CD (somebody else owns reg) I found a fix for it and it worked fine, until some things wouldnt work as it said I needed ServicePack1. I found Service pack one and installed it. Everything was Ok, however the activation key was reset and I had a countdown of 30 days to register......

Right, today, at 6 days left to register I thought Id do sommet about it and looked on KAaaza for a new fix for service pack 1 version of XP home. I followed the instructions and installed it in safe mode. i rebooted and i can longer get in to XP *AT ALL*.

Its a good job I am on a dual boot startup!.

Any ideas peeps?. If I can get the original CD back, can I just reinstall it from CD over the top?(as in putting the CD in the drive and rebooting and choosing install from CD to D: drive) will all my files on the drive dissapear cos I have chance to move them via this windows op sys today....Whats the dangers involved and will it work seeing as Ive had it on before and updated to service pack 1?.

Thanks peeps

Sirius.

Can you boot into safe mode? If so, boot into XP and uninstall the service pack. Personally I wouldn't install security patches downloaded from kazaa, but I guess you know that now

Using the recover option from the original CD should (might) bring you system back into its original state if you can't uninstall the service pack in safe mode.

To get into safe mode you need to press F8 when the system is booting up, roughly about or just after the change BIOS setting prompt. You want to use the Minimal safe mode, this load the least amount of stuff. Then just use add/remove programs to uninstall the service pack (you did let the service pack create backups right?).

If all your graphics drivers are fesked then you can use the safe mode (alternate shell). This loads cmd.exe instead of explorer. From the command prompt do the following:

(1) 'cd' to the 'c:\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst' folder.
(2) Type 'Spuninst.exe' and then press ENTER.
(3) When finished, type exit, and then press ENTER.

you could always install a dodgy xp pro and not need to activate at all. So long as you dont use the standard dodgy serial, everything is fine. Apart from sp1 IMO is a steaming bag of spunk and was quickly removed from mine after it caused no end of probs for me

LMAO @ "steaming bag of spunk"

I agree, SP1 can cause some problems.. some of which have been resolved with post SP1 hotfixes. Problem is.. there are some serious security holes spread open like a cheap whores monkey if you don't install the fixes

its a lose - lose situation

Soz for not responding guys. I have decided to just sack off that heap of shite for the time being and use 2000 server instead. But saying that, I need XP for games, internet connection sharing etc cos 2000 server cant do it cos its a pile of toss.....

Im gonna have to move all my stuff onto 2 drive partitions today and completely flatten my PC 'windows' drives over the weekend and reinstall XP home (plus all my fekking software Id just got nicely set up AGAIN) and try and get around all the short falls I had by not having service pack1 . "Windows cannot perform this task, download service pack 1" and all that BS.

Why does the need to run Internet sharing, Printing, Networking, Games and Audio/Graphics Applications have to be so fekking complicated and full of pitfalls which leave you pulling your hair out?. How hard does it need to be?. Its the techies keeping themselves 'untouchable' I reckon......lol.

Thanks guys,

Sirius.

I wouldnt touch XP with with a barge holeIts like when NT first arrived full of bugs and compatibility problems

2000 server is what i use and it plays every game i put onto it

only sometimes do i have to bugger around with it to make things work

2000 is the best OS MS ever did (Besides DOS lol)

NT was a my favourite MS OS, 2000 (NT5) is OK and I use it on a regular basis. Windows XP is basically 2000 with some extra features installed.

I've found XP to be really stable and exceptional in gaming enviroments. All the issues I've ecountered have been due to hotfix's. I've have 2 major issues with XP in a year period but other than that its been flawless.

Linux has been flawless for 3 years and NT for 2. For me anyhoots.

Windows XP will be the standard desktop for the new .NET framework and MS wanted to stop supporting 2000 now. They pulled their finger out and committed to supporting it a bit longer but expect it to disappear soon. XP is your future

Ive (well, me and my bruv) have had no end of problems with 2000 server. We both cant run ANY games whatsoever - they just flash on for a millisecond and thats it. Our Sounblaster Live's were a nightmare to get working, internet sharing and networking connection was and still is the bane of our lives and the cause for several total rehashes of our computers in a few months....
Apparently its because we are both using server on the network, even though I was set as client. 2000 standard may be OK but it doesnt explain all the problems we've had (and we dont have that anyway).

I must admit I like windows 2000 over XP Home, but XP Home is far easier on the whole. You even have a 'repair' facility for network issues which has been very handy already, games are working fine and audio/Networking/Internet sharing worked first time without having to touch anything!. Made a very suprising change .

My brother needs to use 2000 Server though cos he's a computer programmer and you can only do certain things on that level of windows, all this VB stuff and microsoft.net malarky - scary stuff!.

Anyways

See ya laterz alligaterz
