decks to computer help

Can someone let me know the process of getting your mix done on decks onto cd then onto computer. Sorry for the ignorance but i havent got an igloo about the process so it could take some explaining.

Thanks in advance if anyone has the time and patience to explain.

If it was me, I wouldnt bother with the CD inbetween. But hey it doesnt really matter.

Have you got the following checklist:

a) Decks and mixer
b) Soundcard in your 'puter
c) Sound recording prog (CoolEdit/Wavelab/Logic/Cubase etc)
d) Cdr recorder
e) Set of leads

On your mixer, you should have a spare set of AUX output at the back. You will need a lead which goes from those sockets to a headphone type plug at the other end. This headphone plug should fit in your soundcard's "Line input" socket. NOT the Microphone socket cos you may get crappy sound quality.

You have then got to set up your audio program (if necessary) to make sure its looking at and using your soundcard not any prebuilt windows thing or owt else.

Your audio program should have a level indicator which you set by trial and error by using your decks and mixer so that you dont go into 'toast' ie over the red whilst mixing.

If the levels are all wrong and your mixing really low down on your mixers faders or its way too loud, you may have to look in the windows control panel mixer for your sound settings, and if theres no sound at all, make sure 'line in' is picked as the recording source in windows too.

Make sure you have shitloads of Harddisk space cos of the size of wav files (perhaps this is why u use a cd first?). Then record and mix away .

Save as appropriate after bringing to the boil.....and burn to CD if req'd.

Of course, you should be just under the red at all time whilst recording otherwise youll have a shitload of 'normalising' to do (an option which gets it to maximum permitted volume without distortion so that all your recordings are the same level like in the audio industry) and make sure you trim off any excess pastry at the end.....dont lick the bowl.

Hope this helps (although a similar question was asked a few days ago...)

Sirius.

Oh, I forgot. Depending on your setup, you may ned to run the leads from your amplifier rather than your mixer - it depends.

Your Amplifier should have some sort of output socket arrangement, even if you have to fool it by plugging your mixer into 'tape in' and plugging the 'tape out' AUX sockets to your pc....

Its been a while since Ive messed about with all this, but I always have a good few adaptors to hand just in case such as 2x 2 AUX to 6.35mm headphone jacks, small headphone to big headphone adaptors and different combinations etc....that way you wont get stuck. Just spend 10 minutes to work out what connections you might need for your devices.

If all else fails, and its a bit naughty, you may be able to run a headphone to headphone connection from the front of your amplifier (?). Again, It depends on your gear. Ive resorted to that in the past I think, but my amplifier allows you to plug headphones in and listen out the speakers at the same time if you wish, yours may not.

Im pretty sure the mixer option above will work out though, but I just thought Id warn yer. .

Good luck, and get yer mix posted on here asap .
