Making Personal Backups of DVD's

I want to make a personal backup copy of some of my DVD's. Has anyone come across a tool that will Rip, convert and write VCD's or someother format I can stick into my DVD player.

I've played with some separate tools that rip, then I have to use frame rate calcs etc to sort of the parameters to convert... way 2 complex, looking for something that does it all in one

Nice one.. looks a lot more easier than what I was trying to do. I'm at work at the moment so I can't try out the panasonic thingy... is a demo version or do I have to pay to get it?

check the tools section out, DVDx is a freeware programme and the panasonic things is the actual mpeg encoder, if you can't 'fin' it free anywhere there's others mentioned there, one of which is freeware.

it just seems that the panasonic encoder gives the best results, but the free ones will work too..you can also get a demo of the panasonic one.

Thanks for the links guys, not had chance to check them all out yet but this leads me onto the next question...

When I copy a dvd, erm, I mean, make a personal backup what is the best format to use so that I can play the copy/backup on my DVD. I'm guessing something like VCD or SVCD.

Is DIVx just for using on ya PC?

I should read the webpages I know but heh

Div-x Is only for viewing on your PC.

VCD will play on most DVD Players (there are still some out there that say they will play em but they don't !)

SVCD will play on quite a lot of DVD players (worth checking if yours will play em as they're better quality).

There are quite a few proggys which will convert everything for you in one go, then all you have to do is burn with Nero Etc.

Try DVDx for an all in one proggy (you may have to rip the DVD to your hard disk first).

Then there's DUPDVD which is another which is supposed to actually burn it as well as everything else).
