Please can anyone help.....

Im applying fo a job and in the job speck in the desirable section they want you to have experience in Bespoke Software Systems.

What is this and can I blag it ??? Is it similar to something else or you know ???

And does anyone know where I can get some soft of laymans info about it ???

Its not essential, but they might ask me if I know what it is in an interview....so it would be handy to know something....

Any info would be appreciated...

Ta in advance

Bespoke development is basically a nerdy way of saying "taylor made", more often than not Sweet, Bespoke Software is some form of custom designed application. You know like someone who owns a business, say a clothes shop, would/could ask for a devolpment team to make them a specific program to cater for their specific needs...said program would be "bespoke".

Not easy to explain in words.......

Hope this clears things up a little

Cheers Myk

I dont really undersatnd...so will tell you what the job is..

Im applying to be an administraor for a design and copyright company. They basically, from what I can gather from reading their booklet, give copyright to artists of tv stuff, web stuff, poster makers, leaflets etc...

I have to explain my experience in all of their person specks and in the desirable bit they ask for experince in using bespoke software packages... I had absolutely no idea what is was/is, and was just wondering, cos I imagine if I got an interview they would ask me if I knew anything about it.

I obviously cant say I have experience, but it might be helpful to have some sort of basic understanding....

Oh and another thing (which thankfully isnt mentioned in the person speck, but is in the duties) to take minutes at meetings....does this automatically mean shorthand...or are there other ways of taking minutes ?? They dont mention shorthand or speed writing anywhere and they are quite specific about other things...so Im hoping that taking minutes isnt another way of saying shorthand...cos I cant do it

I see well seem as copyrighting is involved I pressume they ask you for experience in Bespoke in the sense that as they are taylor made progams you would need to understand the lawful definitions to which a copyright can be applied to something that is custom made (feck that sounds confusing). Tell you the truth Sweet I'm not 100% what part of "your" job would entail the necessity for understanding or using "bespoke" software so I cant help you much.

Again Im even more sorry as Im feckin clueless as to what "minute taking" is. It sounds like the want you to make some kind of written log during the meeting, detailing what has been said and done at any given time

I wouldnt think it was shorthand coz they could just as easily say "shorthand" and stop speaking bollocks, but again not 100% sure, Ive been in Spain too long to be upto date with modern UK business jargon.

Soz hun

Eitherway I hope it all goes well for you, good luck

Hi babes,

Taylor made programs are programs that can not be found in the market. For example if you work for the City Council, then they will have a very specific software that was wirtten just for them. Or if you work in a call center the customers accounts are on such a system. These systems are created to meet the need of the company as a whole, and most of the time they are useless to other companies as they have different needs.

Hope this makes sence....

Taking "minutes in" is basicaly when you sit in on a meeting and you write down EVERYTHING that is going on, then go away and type it up to produce the "minutes" which is basicaly a summary of the meeting itself. You don't have to do this via short hand, but you better write fast, and have a bloody good abreviation system up and running! If you get the job, learn short hand.... or even take a tape recorder in, that way you will be able to refer to it if you can't read your notes

Good luck babes xx

Cheers guys

I understnd it a bit better now. I used to work for a company called Bottoms Up which had its own computer system (which would have been completely useless to anyone else)...so if Im understanding you right, this means its bespoke yeah ??

And cheers for the info on minutes, I thoiught they would have asked for shorthand if it was that, but just wanted to make sure. I'll have to learn to write quick again !!

Anyway, got a bugger of an aplication form to fill in and gotta get it done before w/e

I'll keep you posted

Sweet xx

Don't worry about the minutes, just tell them that you don't know short-hand but you took the minutes for the meetings in your last job.

Basically, you took notes during the meeting and then produced a brief 1 or 2 page document detailing the main points made during the meeting and produced an action list showing tasks that were asigned to people during the meeting. This document was then emailed to all the individuals present at the meeting.

Bespoke systems is the biggest area of blag in the world. I agree with Myk when he says "what part of "your" job would entail the necessity for understanding or using "bespoke" software". It sounds like the person who wrote the job spec doesn't really understand themselves. The biggest blag to get through that is to talk about your ability to learn fast including computer systems, state some examples from previous roles where you had to get to grip with new computer systems.

If on the other hand they want you to understand the legal side of bespoke systems and copyright then I dunno but I'd guess its exactly the same as normal commercial packages... At the end of a day, a taylored suit (bespoke) and an off-the-shelf suit are both still a suit... the only difference is in fit and cost

If they do want some knowledge of bespoke systems then use terms like COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) or GOTS (Government Off The Shelf) for a comparision to bespoke systems. Also, certain companies like the MoD require that the details of the bespoke system remain secret.... I can think of some more stuff if you need it
