Candi Staton Review

Fucking amazing. Great, intimate little venue. Never heard a voice like it. Thought I was going to burst into tears for the first 3 songs. Unbelieveably touching and powerful. Its effortless for her. She did Suspicious minds to start, and the set included another Elvis song 'In the ghetto', stand by your man (she did it before Tammy Wynette apparently) a couple of other soul numbers, a bit of blues and disco and then finished off with young hearts run free, sending the place absolutely mental for you've got the love at the end, followed by an encore of you've got the love again, by which time the crowd was peeling itself off the ceiling.

She said she loves England because we stuck with her when the US 'kicked her to the kerb'. It must be great for a 70 year old lady from Alabama to come over and see the reaction to 'You got the love'. It is my favourite house record of all time. No wonder she loves it here.

Anyway, absolutely tremendous, will definitely go and see her again.

Might get one of the tables upstairs for Jocelyn Brown in October.....

She was gorgeous, bags of charisma, couldn't help but love her. She did a Merle Haggard (country) cover called You don't have far to go

You don't have very far to go before the heartache begins
I already feel the sadness of a heartbreak setting in
you can't love me and still love to hurt me so
if you're trying to break my heart, you don't have very far to go

and a tune called 'His hands' written by the guy from Lambchop Will Oldham, which was amazing as well.

Really blown away. I always loved Elvis, Jonny Cash, even a bit of country before I got into House music, and her gospel and soul kind of links it all together for me.

For me house music is gospel, its always been a spiritual thing, a celebration. Most people are just having a good time, but there's something deeper underlying it all.

Best night out for ages.
