FAC 471: Hallelujah - A Celebration of Madchester 13/05/06

Very quick review (if you want to skip reading the rest..)

Shaun Ryder - didn't turn up, probably pissed in a gutter somewhere
Jon Da Silva - played the best set i've heard him play, best 2 hours of the night
Bez - along with some guy with a laptop 'mixing things up' average
A Guy Called Gerald - only caught the first 15 mins of his set, acidy, but lost it with the mixing
808 State - both Andy & Darren I felt a bit dissapointing for not playing much from the 'MaDchester era'
+ Very special guests - MC Alfonso (M.V.I.T.A) fucking class, he still hasn't lost it!

Tony Wilson "DJ'd" the first 45 mins or so, with some fading out and fading in (no mixing at all) he looked out of place, on stage, wearing a heavy coat, looking uncomfortable. I thought he'd have been better placed saying a few words for the night, instead of trying to DJ.

Next up were 808's Darren, then Andy, both I thought played average sets, very little actually from the MaDchester era, instead choosing to play newer remixes and later 95+ tracks. Good interaction though with MC Alfonso of M.V.I.T.A who was well and truly "In the Area!" - when asked about his 'More House' EP, he told me "its coming out again soon, go buy it!!!" - will believe that when I see it

Next was Bez with a laptop DJ and wacky lightshow/carnival style, but went on to play a load of jungle/breakbeat stuff, that I thought sounded a bit out of place, enjoyed some of it, but the atmos felt a bit edgy whilst that sorta stuff was being played.

Jon Da Silva was next for 2 hours, and he played the best I've heard him play, not only music wise, but his mixing was amazing, was great to see the crowds reactions to a lot of music that you wouldn't think would get big reactions, and talking to a few people throughout his set, they commented on it being nice to hear older stuff like that, that they hadn't heard out for 17+ years! (Of course I plugged the Evo night - butty, we should have been outside after this flyering - d'oh!)

Not even going to say what was played by Jon, other than to say it was absolutely class, and a lot of smiley faces all around, lit up the place throughout his set.

Only caught 15 mins of Geralds set, which was acidy, but thought he lost it with the bad mixing, decided to go home and eat a kebab whilst still

Overall a very good night, kebab was mint too, cheers to Abduls for that

was ok, i'd had no sleep, been smoking weed all day and was on a comedown, then my mate phones and says we are going out to this academy doo - so off we went but tbh i was ready for bed by 10 pm really...

Didnt spot Bez tho, i just seem to remember one guy on his own playing stuff like Urban shakedown and sl2

808state - think it was just one of them, played a bit of new breakbeat stuff, you hear them tunes at tangled all the time. bit crap really but i was looking forward to a full on old skool set

Jon Da Silva - Top stuff... Acid *but i had to give up and go home b4 his set ended*

cant remember much else

After reading the blurb on this I thought they were going to be playing a load of Manc / Indie classics as well

A few people I know went on the back of that assumption

Manc, Andy & Darren from 808 played, Darren first, then Andy. Bez was deffo there, along with a guy behind him with a laptop, playing a mix up of indie at first then breakbeat stuff.

There was some indie stuff played, but not a great deal considering the name of the night 'MaDchester' - Bez & his laptop guru played about 15 mins worth of indie, and also that awful (imo) Jump up, jump up to get down, "hip hop" if you can call it that, track - where all the pissheads rushed to the front lol

He's played 3 times I think for us at Evo, but wasn't as good as he was on Sat night. He was frustrated with the equipment a couple of times at Evo, and when he gets a bit pissed off, he tends to go into a mad one and plays new techno, can be very arrogant as well

Can't believe Wilson was Djing. What is the world coming to. Hooky playing compilation cd's, Bez on a laptop (yeah right) and now Wilson. Talk about trying to suck the last reminents out of something?

Next we'll have Shaun Ryder playing a 6 hour set back to back with James Zabiellia using Abelton

Just seemed a bit desperate almost. I'm sure Da Silva was good though, but quite glad I didn't go in the end to watch Wilson playing his collection of Derruti Column and The Railway Children.

Wilson was on first 10-10.45pm, so if you'd have turned up at 11, you'd never have known lol

There will be other nights there though, probs with a better line up as well
