Card Cloning .................

I'd heard about this but never really took any notice and thought it wouldn't happen to me ........

That was until last Friday when i had nearly a Grands worth of transactions taken out of my account!!. They ranged from £3.71 up to £203 and all the transactions were made twice which in itself looked a bit iffy and today i have found out that the transactions were made in Russia !!!!!.

I have been assured by the bank that i will recieve a full refund once the fraud investigation has took place and this is just a bit of a heads up to warn you to be extra careful with your card ....

Specifically watch out for double swiping , this is were you hand your card over to be swiped and they swipe it once on the correct machine and once on a machine that reads you information , thus allowing it to be cloned .

Also never hand it over in a restaraunt and allow them to take it into the back whilst they swipe it as you havent a clue what they are doing with it whilst they have it .

I know since the introduction of the chip and pin its very rare that we swipe bit its worth remembering all the same.

I think mine was done at an ATM which is quite scary and i aint got a clue how they do it or what we can do about this , apart from go into the bank every time we need to make a withdrawl .

Anyway just thought id give you the heads up .

Gutted for you Warren but yep deffo you'll get it all back - in fact your bank should credit back exactly what was taken out while they investigate

I saw something on some shite prog last night - basically they put in a false cover at an ATM that 'reads' your card deets but also a mini camera over the keypad... the info that is read is useless without the recording of the PIN beng entered apparently ?

Hope it all turns out good for you....

PS You coming down to the Wobble / Crunch / Hac do on the 29th Aug ? Villa have got the 'City of Culture' FC on the Sunday which will be quite a tasty atmosphere given the summer saga of Barrygate...

One way it's done is by criminal insiders tampering with the machines, then installing them in shops or petrol stations as replacements for faulty machines.
They just store up every set of card deets put through on a memory chip inside. After a while the original faulty machine is swappd back in, and the moody one removed, complete with thousands of stolen card deets.

Chip & PIN is not secure either and can be cracked in exactly the same way.

Banks are wise to it, and new mechanisms are gradually being introduced which are secure. These basically use a device like a keyfob which you keep with you, along with the card. The keyfob knows your card, and generates secure code numbers which time-expire every few seconds. When you go to use your card you'll get prompted to enter a number, read the number off the keyfob display & enter it & Robert's yer da's brother.

It'll stop cloning, but obviously no use if you lose both card & keyfob in a robbery or summat. But then there's only so much you can do with technology...

Gutted to hear you got done though... what a pain in the arse!

I'm not to worried about it Shooms to be honest as they have already told me ill get every peeny back within two weeks.

Regards the Villa game , yes i'm up for that , its the same weekend as Bennys paintballing aswell lol . Always a good away Villa although it was always better when we had the Witton Lane until the poisoned dwarf had his way and had us shifted to the side .

Bloody hell that's bad news! I would have had a heart attack!

really fooks me off that some cheeky bastards just think that they can take waht someone else has earned!

Well at least you'll get it all back anyway, but its still a major stress having to wait for it to all be sorted. Imagine if you were going away or something and needed what funds you had for that, it'd be a right pain ion the arse!

Happened to me about 2 months back. The first I heard about it was I got a phone call from my bank asking if I was in India Apparently my card was being used out there.

I've got to say my bank were right on the ball - I never saw a change in my balance and the dodgy transactions never showed up. Didn't hear anything else about it in fact.

I put my hand over the keypad every time I use a keypad now just in case, as it seems even some genuine machines have cameras in em. I only use cash machines from banks and reputable stores too. Better to be safe than sorry.

I also avoid any petrol station run by asians (unless i'm paying cash ) after hearing about all the raids the police did in Bolton

Glad you've sorted it out now mate

Bloody hell it seems to be such a common occurence these days Luckily mines never been done (touch wood!). Think I'll be a bit more careful these days as I use my cards to pay for pretty much everything it's so rare that I carry cash around with me apart from a bit of loose change. Might start doing from now on.

Mine was done once a couple of years ago after I'd paid in an Indian restaurant, the cheeky blighters had took the card away to the machine and then brought it back for me to sign the slip.

They must have took a note of all the info inc the CVC number and later that month I had 2 transactions for sports stuff from mail order down south, card company sorted it out no problem but deffo got to watch and keep hold of ya card(s) no matter what.
