What the Daily Mail would have us believe. Having seen inside a prison and spoken to a number of ex cons, many jail's are not the sort of place you would wish to end up. Of course there will be some jails where the regieme is not harsh enough I grant you.

The death penalty is outmoded & wrong IMHO. For the reasons laid out in Mr Ben's Ian Brady thread.

I don't see anything wrong with incarcerating people though, and it should be hard time they do. There's always a big political backlash against building more prisons for some reason, people tend to take the humanitarian line, where as I'm all for locking people up for long sentences to get them off the streets. People say prisons are just universities of crime, well that maybe so, but you need to occupy people and to stimulate them somehow.

Not saying it should be a picnic though. Far from it.

I would have prisoners working on chain gangs outside all day fixing railway lines, mending roads (or building new ones), picking up litter, cleaning up city centres.

Long hours of hard graft for zero pay. They should pay a bit of a debt to society, and earn their keep by working hard labour while they're inside I reckon.

I don't believe the death penalty is good...it's completely neanderthal in nature too...yeah it makes some people feel good for a bit when the guilty (and sometimes not) are hung/whatever...but it doesn't stop violent crimes from happening. In fact, in the sates where they have the death penalty in the us-they have the highest murder rates!!!!

So what would the death penalty serve? it wouldn't make england safer at all. i don't think anyone judge or not, has the right to take another life.

As i see it alot of peoples views are against the death penalty are based around respect for human life and that noone has the right to take anothers life. Yet in this case two innocent people have been murdered in about as brutal way imaginable, by people who quite clearly have no regard for human life. Id gladly see those responsible hang or die from lethal injection for their crime. Ed

I actually agree, when you are 100% certain. The problem is bringing it back would never work as too many innocent people would be killed also. I personally would have a problem with the criminals background (abuse, neglect etc), which i know does not justify actions, but to me it does at times have to be taken into account. It would just be far to complicated to ever set up a fair system.

Did any one see the BBC news last night with the guy ramming inocent people in his bull dozer at road works?. Now i now that the Palestenians are being persecuted and killed themselves but thats no reason to kill other innocent people.

anyone that thinks the death penalty should be reinstated should look up the case of Derek Bentley, a man put to death for uttering the words "let him have it", when the 16 year old that pulled the trigger was too young to be punished.

miscarriages of justice such as this happen in every country that supports capital punishment, usually because of the pressure applied by the polliticians and the media on the police to get a result

i would support the death penalty for this sort of crime, but how can you be sure that the right person dies?
