| Quite different reasons for killing someone...one is a punishment..one is a completely irrational premeditated torture and murder on an innocent person who has commited no crime...how exactly is it no better at all?

Because they would not give someone a cig. Took a cab they thought was theirs. Looked at them the wrong way. Stepped on to the wrong postcode. Are these "good reasons"? I like you am against the death penalty, but perhaps for slightly different reasons. Your opinion is personal to you and I respect it, but just don't understand that bit I copied to this post. Unless you were saying that some murderers in their own warped minds had what they considered a "good reason" to kill. . . however wrong they actually were? However, it is a bit of a stretch to go from that, to a position where, because criminals felt they were right that society is then wrong to administer punishment (capital or otherwise) on the grounds that we just don't understand why they did it. You see what I mean Lozzie? I may have completely misunderstood your reasons by the way!! LOL ![]()

| What about the scum who deserve to be murdered, yet the police and law seem powerless to do owt about them? I know of a gangland prick who has been present at 3 suspicious drug related deaths that i know of, half the area know of, the filth know of, yet he walks around with impunity. What if some member of the family involved in one of the deaths, decided there is no justice, and went out to sort it for themself? |

| What about a victim of an abusive relationship cracked and finally killed her tormentor? Would she deserve the death penalaty? There are as many good reasons for killing certain kinds of pondlife, as the dumb pointless reasons quoted above. |

| At the end of the day we are still primates, with a thin veneer of civilisation over the top. Were always gonna behave like animals, 'cause that's precisely what we are. |

IMO you are never going to solve crime by inflicting punishment, admittedly it would probably "work" if we did use the NY approach described by Sheikh, but what a sad world of punishment it would make for. IMO the only true, but much, much more challenging longer term way to do it, which I know the government have started to work on, is to prevent people becoming that warped in the first place, by changing peoples belief systems, and improving the conditions that lead to people becoming that way, people aren't inherently born evil. Catch the problem at the root, before it even evolves into a problem, instead of rinsing resources on punishing people and teaching the wrong ethic. Granted changing peoples beliefs is much harder than shoving them in prison once the crime has been done, but its worth aiming for. Incarceration would still be necessary, because retribution is necessary and it would take years to make a real shift and stop people slipping through the net. Those are just my humble thoughts anyway kids ![]()
