we have never been given the freedom of choice with the beeb, its automatically thrust upon us that we have to pay it if we own a TV regardless of if we watch it or not. its definetly not a fair way of doing things, but its never going to change, not for the forseeable future.

Theres been many meetings over dropping the licence fee and including adverts in transmissions, those at the highest level always dissmiss it straight off, they see the company as an institution and very British, like the Queen and drinking tea ! its part of what we are now.

it is still a great company. has got flaws though.

In Belgium and Holland you get BBC as a part of your standard cable package - the whole package costs less then the UK license fee and you get your Nicks and MTVs included

Bargain I reckon.
You could get an OSA gold membership for that.

Interesting debate here. Which, as it happens is what you can get on the BBC via Question Time, Newsight etc, I don't see many of the other pay channels providing these. Good points also about the radio, orchestra and other broadcast stuff that they do.

And how many of the pay channels would produce stuff like "Coast" and all the David Attenborough programmes??? Best you can get on some pay channels is 18 repeats in a row of "Friends".

Gotta agree with the Sheikh, Radish etc, the BBC has it's flaws but it's still a country mile ahead of any of the pay channels.

How much does it cost?

A colour TV Licence costs £139.50. A black and white TV Licence costs £47.00.

Who the fuck still has a Black and white TV?

If you are blind or severely sight impaired, you need a TV Licence to use any TV receiving equipment to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV.

If you or someone you live with is blind or severely sight impaired, you qualify to receive a 50% concession on the cost of your TV Licence

The blind concession reduces the cost of your TV Licence by 50%. So a colour TV Licence will cost £69.75 and a black and white TV Licence will cost £23.50.

I don't really see a problem with that? Are you saying there shouldn't be that discount? My great grandma can hardly see, but she loves her soaps and songs of praise. Why should she pay the full amount if she can't see? Knowing how much the TV Licence people pester you, I don't suppose its easy to 'scam' the system on being visually impaired?

I think blind people should be forced to have black & white TVs.... anything else is wasted on them....

Same applies for them being forced to have munters & mingers as partners... how will they know the difference ?

By the same token deaf people should be forced to marry a Sweet Sensation so they'd be oblivious to the incessant whinging & nagging

You can't get bbc3 without digital though...so really that annoying £9 a month or whatever it is-is so you can watch beeb 1 and 2. I think it's gay. i hate that you have to pay it or you get fined! maybe i dont want to watch bbc 1, maybe i should only have to pay half!?

Also, what will happen when we switch to digital? will we have to pay it then?? what if you pay for your digital AND for your tv lisence???

i think it's total capitalism-but you have to do it dont you???

I think it's a shame that so many people are slating the BBC and the principle of it been a public funded / public service broadcaster of TV and radio.

It's the envy of the world and respected by most of the planet.

Not having adverts is worth the money alone in my opinion. I think it has got a bit dumber to cater for the fact that people are dumber, which is a shame. However the new digital channels offer some great programmes.

ITV is paid for by advertising. . . . which is why you get lowest common denominator shows and interruptions to be force fed adverts for shite you don't need.

The license fee ensures a fixed income for the BBC and allows it the security to budget for and broadcast both high rating and minority interest shows.

It would be a sad day if this tradition were to be broken. I for one think that many would miss the BBC we have now if it were to become a commercial channel.

All this moaning over £2 a week. Well it's peoples opinions and that's fair enough, but I am left flabbergasted by the lack of respect for Dear Old Aunty Beeb.

Symptomatic of today's want it all, don't want to pay society.

I do however take the point that if you never use any of the BBC services then why should you pay. The problem is how do you stop people abusing any opt out scheme? To be fair though, as much as people say they don't watch the Beeb. . .. .I bet they do even for only the odd programme here and there.

A post worthy of a pint of an alcoholic hops-based beverage of your choice (and white wine for the good lady) paid for by yours truly.

Nail on head.

It's all about the bigger picture (and no that isn't an awful television-related pun).

Mister Radish I declare you are a scholar and a toff, sir.

I agree with everything but that comment....
If the programmes have changed then it's because the public want something different out of their entertainment in comparison to what was in demand years ago. I don't think people have got dumber at all!

I do and meet even dumber people everyday! Not claiming to be a genius myself like.

Are people getting dumb because TV is dumbed down or is TV dumbed down because people are dumber?? Bit of both I reckon.

Still if you give people tripe to watch they become conditioned to expecting it. I do take your point that people's taste has changed and that will always be the case. Some new programmes cater for this without been dumber. . . .however most do not.

There is a section of society that are getting ever more sophisticated, but in general the majority are getting dumber and have ever shorter attention spans and TV reflects this in my opinion.
