foookin useless they r are!!

just received a letter from HM revenue & customs
informing me that i am one of the families whose data has been lost
so all details of my name, address, NI number, my childrens names, dates of births, bank account details and child benefit details have all been lost ????

and at the end of the letter it says 'i would like to offer my personal apologies for any worry or concern this data loss may cause you. and i can assure you that all efforts are being made to ensure that such a losss can never happen again'

what a piss take never happen again!! well its a bit bloody late now! whoever has got away with this now has the potential for mega fraud on mass!

its fookin insane
has anyone else been told its their family too??

any advice anyone?

you would hope so
but i cant see it
it would cost them a fortune the ammount of families involved
and they wont have given the true figures either - mite as well double it

its unbelievable - they have lost all this data
yet, if my tax return is even a day late to HM revenue & customs all hell would break loose!!

My mum got the letter too.....personal apology my arse. Why isn't it properly signed by anyone? If they were that arsed, they would have got somebody to sit there for days signing letters

On a serious note, it is quite bad. My mum and dad got a letter off them a few months ago implying they have been receiving benefits they shouldn't have. Errr, my parents don't get any benefits? (not including the child tax credit thing...which made them much worse off by the way!) My dad hit the roof, because they taxed him even more than usual to make up for it, without any evidence or his permission. This letter about lost data has just been the icing on the cake for my father, and he is going craaaaaaazy about it. He has written, phoned, etc etc. and he is a stubborn man - he honestly won't let it lie, even if he is wasting his time!! In fact, my dad works for data protection in GM Police, which is probably why he is soooooo wound up.

i think the details are of Everyone who is receiving child benefit (25 million of us) im not too worried to be honest, i cant see the government not compensating anyone if the details are used for fraud. That would look pretty bad for them if they didnt.

Well, they keep saying 'oooo it isn't in the hands of criminals, so don't worry'. I don't care who has the details, I just care that they are in the wrong place or 'lost'. I doubt there would be any compensation whatever happened.

We got our letter yesterday. I was well pissed off about this before, but now some faceless bureaucrat has apologised I feel much better

If the information does find it's way into the wrong hands then they will most likely sit on it for months, even years before using it fraudulently. By which time the Government will have a certain amount of deniability as to whether the info came from their missing disks or another source.

Alistair Darling ( how can you trust a man with a name like that) made me laugh, telling people to check their bank accounts and statements for unusual activity. As if any self respecting criminal is going to start using the data a few days after it's gone missing. The thing is, a lot of people probably checked straight away, saw nothing was amiss and thought 'Phew, I'm OK, nothing to worry about', only to have their accounts emptied next summer.

Having said all that, the disks are probably in a wheelie bin behind Aldi somewhere

Thankfully I don't have kids so am not affected, but I am really angry as the info they have lost in the wrong hands means a lot of people will suffer from fraud, its not so much folks accounts being drained but more fraudsters taking out finance using the details on the disk, scarry stuff!!

I work for a bank and my advice to anyone affected is to keep checking your credit reports (you can get this free on line don't pay for it) and if you see any finance appear you weren't aware of report it to the police ASAP

Someone mentioned whoever has the disks wont try to use the info till the heat has died down, I wouldn't bank on it! There is no way the powers that be can monitor all the people affected to watch for fraud there just is not the resource to do it.

keep your eyes peeled folks!!
