I just got a pack of Smarties from the machine at work 1st pack in years.

1. Where has the plastic top gone that you can slap the pack and fire the lid 30meters into somebodies eye?

2. Where is the hard crispy shell coating gone? Its now pretty strange whatever it is?

Next they will change the name of them

To answer your questions

1) they took away the plastic lid because it was a choking hazard for children (this was in 95 when the H.A.S.S.P (Hazard analysis on critical control points) law came into effect

2) The blue ones where taken out two years ago now, because of the change in food regulations. You can not get a natural blue food coloring, only artificial of Nature Identical, so it was removed under the act

lol....this is a common urban miff, it is not the the shell that is made from beetle shells, it is the red food color cochannel, which is made from crushed beetles blood, that they used as a red food color, but this was replaced in 1987 with Ponsuer 4R, which is the same food coloring Indians use in Tandoori paste

cochineal (crushed beetle) is still used as a food dye today, not sure if its in a smartie though

thought they used that cochineal for red licquorice too?

anyone remeber an alcopop from years ago when they first started coming out, cloured red with cochineal? sure it was called beetlejuice
dont think it took off that well though really. it was alright though, tasted quite nice!

and if blue coloring is banned how come you still get blue sweeets / sherbert / icing etc... ?

Blue food coloring is not banned as a rule, it is banned from food products claiming to use "No artificial food colors, of flavorings"

The Liquorice laces did use cochineal, but have also switch to using Ponseur R

Yes i do remember the Beetle juice drink to, the firm "Dragoco" where i use to work as a development chef, developed the flavoring for the product, not sure as to why it is not on the market anymore...but my guess is it was not a good seller, and was replace due to shelf space demands from new products
