pump up the volume documentry c4

Quote:
Just a question, what was your opinion on the " PUMP UP THE VOLUME " 3 parter, a lot of people on the board ( My self included ) where very impressed with the first two parts, but feel they skipped over a lot of history in the last episope and completley missed out the whole rave seen of 92, and just went staight into the days of Goldie, D & B and Jungle. I like many others feel they should have made it a 4 parter, instead of trying to cram 10 years into one Episode
Well firstly let me say that I'm totally in agreement with the board on the fact that the first two programs were absolute quality. But like we found program three wanting in many area's, I'm sure our American counterparts could also pick holes in it.

That said i actually met with the directors and producers of the program who all shared the same common goal and that was to present a definitive picture of how the whole scene began. Now then, the program was comminssioned by Channel 4, to an independant production company.

The company Flame TV did it's best to present the history but given the fact they only had 145mins to compile this story, it was always going to be an up hill struggle. As the production company your governed by what the commissining network regards at watchable or documentive TV.

The director had his specification and that was to follow the story of House music and not neccessarily focus on the scenes created as a byproduct of the sound. The fact is for some reason Channel 4 doesn't appear interested in compiling a program on Acid House & Rave Cultural in the UK. I know because i've personally submitted a documentry outline for a series of programs that was turned down. The story on media hill was a program was already commissioned by C4 that covers Acid House.
So now that Acid House has been mentioned in the series, no network is interested in commissioning anything else on the topic.

Anyway! If you noticed the first two programs were centralised around the creation of the sound and thats why it was so good. The third program tried to cram way too much into 50mins and everything just seemed to fly by very quickly. My original interview lasted maybe one and half hours yet all they screened was two sentences. Yet whilst we were on location (original venue of some of my parties) an orthadox jewish man approached us and asked what was going on. Once i explained our reason for being there, he asked the dates of the events and would you believe he owned the building at that time.

So we had a big conversation about what happended on that night and he said he came to confront us but we had lawyers and then he searched for us for two years. He was very pleasent about the whole thing and of course i apologised. I thought it made excellent viewing and i'm trying to get it for my CD.

We still need an idepth documentry on Acid House though i wont hold my breath...

Well said Wayne mate - after the 1st 2 progs the rest was a real anticlimax... a real wasted opportunity.... also yet again showing media bias to London & the South.... aside from a cusory nod to the Hac there no real mention of the Nothern scen - Kool Kat, Blackburn parties, Live the Dream, Love Decade, Konspiracy, Thunderdome, Shelleys or Venus.....

Cheers for that m8, clears a lot of things up I think for everyone

Although in my opinion, I still think they gave far to much attention to Goldie/drum & bass/garage music. This must have taken up at least 2 thirds of the last episode, wich in my opinion was not a masive faze in the history of house music. I mean I dont want to knock Goldie ( I dont relly know the guy ) but a lot of the things he said where well over egsaturated, and to me Inner city life ( Although a good record in it's own right ) was not a ground breaking record

I just feel the time would have been better spent talking about the everlution of the dance music from the M25 partys into the clubs. I also think that it would have been good for them to show just how diffrent the Northen house music sound differd and evolved in other ways to the Southern side. I am a big fan of both types, but there was nothing for me that showed how the Northen all nighter's piano sound was created and how it evolved from a fusion of such musics as Nothern Soul ( wigan pier, Cassino, KGB's) with Chicargo house

Anyway I will stop ranting now, and just say that in comparison to many other history of music programs this one for me was by far the best

Cheers for your explenation m8
