IPODS...The Con of the Century

I bought a 30gb ipod last year (october) and had no probs with it at all until this month. It just stopped working and kept on freezing. So I dug out the receipt and luckily found that it was still in warranty. Took it down to my nearest apple store, the assistant reloaded it but it still did't work, so I insisted on a new replacement.

The nerdy assistant, eventually agreed and pulled out a box with a new ipod in it. It was't till I was going through the paperwork that I realised that the so called new ipod was infact a "reconditioned model". This means that most of the machine is new, but some parts could have come from other faulty machines. This was't the worst part, I then found out that the so called new machine then only had a 90 day warranty.

To me this does't make sense, surely if you bought a TV and it went wrong (in warranty) you would expect a new replacement, not a reconditioned TV. I tried to explaine this to the twat but he was't having any of it.

I have written a letter of complaint to apple and am waiting to hear back, but have since done a bit of research and there have been various articles written about people having the same complaints. It seems that apples stance is "take it or leave it" it seems to me that they just expect you to throw away your ipod once it stops working, even if its only just a year old .

So people, I agree that the ipod is pretty cool and looks the business, but don't expect your £200 gadget to last much over a year

And don't expect APPLE to give a toss either.

That's out of order!

Although I doubt you would get another 12 month warranty as well as a new machine? Warranties tend to run from the original purchase date, but some shops are cool about giving another 12 months. . .??

Wait till the battery fails and you have to send it back to Apple to get it replaced...

I've had a 20gb version since this model came out and i have had no problems with it at all, its bulletproof and i am only changing cause i have run out of room on it. I have just upgraded to the 160gb version

I had a nano that i bought the missuss and it failed and we got a new replacement with 90 day warranty

I think the 1979 sale of goods act would apply in this case, it states that equipment must be fit for purpose, if you have an expensive bit of kit the govt says that it must last a decent amount of time regardless of the warranty and that the manufacturer must be liable for repair costs even outside the warranty. They are allowed to offer to repair the faulty item before they have to give you a new or reconditioned one first, you are only allowed to insist on a replacement if they repair fails or it goes again quite soon after

If you by a shitty piece of crap for £20 then it would not be expected to last as long, if you know what I mean

Not sure where the 90 day warranty would come into this for the replacement though?

I have had two replacement Sky+ boxes and got a years warranty with each one

Never saw the attraction with I Pods.... it's all about the name & nothing else imo.... end of the day it's just an MP3 player... with flakier software...

Also am I correct in saying that you never 'own' any files d/l from I tunes... & that the file has a shelf life.... ? Or did I get that wrong ? I can't be arsed googling... Someone at work has one & was explaining the deal to me.... but they are female so she prolly got it all wrong

to play devil's advocate. This is apple's standard policy and I used to be one of the aforementioned nerdy assistants. I would have had to have done the same thing if you'd come in to visit me. I have had the same ipod for 2.5 years now. I guess I've just been lucky and or gentle

just buy one off ebay and fit it yourself. Erm I didn't really say that of course as it invalidates the warranty

about the shelf life I'm not sure but you certainly can't share the file as it is bloody password protected when you try and play it. Right pain in de arse. I've never bought anything from itunes.
I am a member of perhaps the greatest and least known club in the world called easynews. I cannot tell you how good it is and only £5 a month.

Sy – same happened to me last yr mate. I bought a reconditioned 10 month old 20gig ipod off ebay and after a month it kept freezing. So I typed the serial number into apples website and they said it still had a months warranty left, so they agreed to courier it at their cost to their Dutch Repair shop. Anyway, I got a brand spanking new / reconditioned one back a few weeks later. Within a month the same thing happened though – kept freezing and then the hard drive died. When I checked on Apple’s website it said the warranty had run out even though id only had the ‘new’ one a month. Apparently to get it fixed prifvately (ie a new hard drive) would have cost me over £100 too.

And likes been said, I cant see the appeal of ipods over other models. Less reliable, cant access it without itunes, etc. Shite.

about this site is the amount of people rubbishing itunes. Which I have found to be head over heels the best music player ever. Windows media player is a nightmare I never liked that winamp either. I can convert aiff's into mp3's easily with itunes and burn cds super easily. Love it

but most people (who i know anyway) just use(d) itunes as a library / access point into the ipod. It just seems to be a restricting / unnecessary piece of proprietary software. eg ive just lost my samsung mp3 player but i cant just go and rob my girlfriend's ipod and stick my tunes on it as i need to have access to her laptop / itunes to get the tunes on (i think !)

Itunes is great for looking after your files and you DO NOT have to buy music from Itunes you can get it elsewhere and use Itunes to put it on your ipod

Generally the people who slag them the most dont have one and have never used it IME

the reason all those people people buy them is cause they are the best

nearly every test you see of them with their competitors has them coming out on top, i am quite nerdy when it comes to technology and would not buy something just cause everyone else does or just cause its cool, i will buy the best if i can afford it

look at the Sony Walkman farce for a starter

I find it strange that you can be cool if you have a Apple MAC but a sheep if you have an Ipod?
