A legendary Black Country sport of the Victorian era of youngsters jumping across canals has had a revival in the Dudley and Wolverhampton areas.

But because of the danger of Weils Disease and injuries caused by underwater objects for anyone falling in, British Waterways have mounted a campaign to try and stop the activity.
The 'sport' was made famous in Victorian times by Joe Darby, a Netherton, Dudley, man whose phenomenal leaps earned him the title of Jumping Joe Darby.

There's no record of what his full time occupation was; ,it is said he earned a living by the number of bets he won.

His most famous recorded feat was jumping across a canal in two bounds, the second leap apparently from the surface of the water. In fact as he was nearing the end of the jump, he would let one or both feet just touch the water.

Unfortunately no records appear to have survived of the actual measurements of his jumps although localities where jumps took place were known to have been well in excess of 15ft - and it is said he had never received any athletic training.

The Victorian sport is now in the 21st century with youngsters posting video and phone video clips on the cult website YouTube.
