A million little pieces

by James Frey

who's read it?
what did you think?

I am finally getting round to reading it, after wanting to for ages, and have to say I like it so far
Between initially wanting to check it out, and actually doing so I had heard rumours that parts of it were allegedly a bit exaggerated, shall we say , and now I've bought it it even addresses this on the cover note, and he admits bits were embellished and explains.

One of the things that attracted me was that it was a true story , but now knowing of the alterations I still think that even if it were a complete work of fiction i'd still enjoy it

just under halfway through at the min

for those not familiar, in a nutshell its the story of an alcoholic drug addicted blokes time in rehab

Freaky Dancing ~ Good book though Jigs, very funny

There was a particular bit in the James Frey one that I thought was very sad and quite poignant

I am alone. Alone here and alone in the world.alone in my heart and alone in my mind. alone everywhere, all the time, for as long as i can remember. alone with my family, alone with my friends, alone in a room full of people. alone when i wake, alone through each awful day, alone when i finally meet the blackness. I am alone in my horror. Alone in my horror.
I don't want to be alone. I never wanted to be alone. I fucking hate it. I hate that i have no one to talk to, i hate that i hate that i have no one to call, i hate that i have no one to hold my hand, hug me, tell me everything is going to be all right. I hate that i have no one to share my hopes and dreams with, i hate that i no longer have any hopes or dreams, i hate that i have no one to tell me to hold on, that i can find them again.
i hate that when i scream, and i scream bloody murder, that i am screaming into emptiness. i hate that there is no one to hear my scream and that there is no one to help me learn how to stop screaming. i hate that what i have turned to in my loneliness lives in a pipe or a bottle. i hate what i have turned to in my loneliness is killing me, has already killed me, or will kill me soon. i hate that i will die alone. I will die alone in my horror....

I've read the book, and think it's fab. I LOVE the style he writes in, totally different, and very easy to read. Even if it is a bit hyped in places, it suits the story very much, and is a fantastic read!!!!

(*Sonz)-ive still got ur copy here!don't worry!

yeah, I think it's easy as pie, especially considering beforehand I'd heard about such stuff no quotation marks, random capitalization, left-aligned text, wild paragraph breaks etc... so even though i'm an avid reader who devours books, and more so if theyre that little bit different to the norm, I was expecting it to be much tougher going and / or difficult to get into but its fine
I like it.

I was thinking about whether you still had my copy the other day loz! lol

Anyways, I LOVE this book. Just randomly picked it up coz of it's front cover (the copy I have is white with multicoloured dots all over) and it got me interested as to what it was.

Really easy to read and a nice quick pace so you just can't put it down! I don't give a shit whether some bits are exaggerated, I think most peoples autobiographies probably are! lol.

The book made me cry and smile!

Yeah its not a bad read this at all, althugh in places its slightly ott yank and dare i say it melodramatic*. There is a follow-up, My Friend (Sam lol) Leonard that i keep meaning to get.

If you like this sorta shiz then you could take a look at Drugs Are Nice by Lisa Crystal Carver- thats a brill book about her teenage years as a druggie and the writer of a fanzine 'Rollerderby', and of course the singer/founder of Suckdog. Great misspent youth. Is a little gritty in parts, but i like grit (like Chris Langham it makes me feel clean lol).

*What i mean is, like most Americans who have/had counselling they tend to dwell and go on about shit too much.

Anyone ever been to that second hand bookshop in Preston- it has possibly the best name ever for a shop of that ilk (The Temple of the Muses!). You can almost smell the dust from the books as you walk past. I deffo want to spend a full afternoon in there when i have not got a screaming baby attached to my hip. With a flask of over stewed tea if poss an all, ahhh bliss.

there is a bit at the end that makes not much sense. I can't tell you until you;ve finished it. I just don't trust him now. Especially the dentist bit. How can addicts not be allowed anaesthetic but can be allowed gallons of coffee?

A Million Little Lies - January 8, 2006

It was what initially was a plus-point / attraction for me , but like I said I since found out to the contrary. Truth bent, or complete fabrications? I dunno, and maybe will never know

but as books / stories go though I am enjoying reading it so far.
I dont tend to read many fiction books but I certainly dont disregard them, and they can still capture your fascination well

Lottie, I'd get it. I really enjoyed it and it's such an easy book to read. Nice quick pace.

Another book I'm reading at the mo is "the definitive book of body language" which is looking good too!
