I played piano and recorder at school. My mum was the recorder teacher at the primary so I was kinda pre signed up for that one lol. i didn't appreciate the benefit of playing an instrument until much later when i started writing my own music, so I've got to give her credit where its due really. Ed

Yeah i played piano at school,

I know i will be encouraging my kids to learn an instrument, i must have driven my mum & dad up the wall, the same repetitive notes being played over & over, lol

Just imagine when she's part of a band or in an orchestra, how cool would that be

I started learning the trumpet when I was 7. Had lessons till I was about 17 / 18 ish, which was when I reached a point where I'd started to get a bit bored of it and wasn't going to improve any more. It was probably one of the best things my parents ever did for me, and I can't imagine what it's like to not be able to play an instrument.

I'd say keep encouraging her, and if she's still keen in 6 months time you could perhaps get her to start playing something that's slightly more pleasing on the ear than the recorder!

LOL @ recorder. Yeah, we head to learn the recorder at junior school, I still have it at home actually. It was a Hestair Hope (educational) one you had to buy from the school, and it was plastic, came with its own cleaner and a funky blue soft case. hahaha. mad.

At high school I had no interest in music classes cos it was all boring and about treble clefs and all that toss, violins, all that jive.....If they had computers back then, cubase, keyboards etc then I think I would have done it.

It will probably be a fad to be honest, and although you may have to suffer it for 6 months, I bet it slowly dies off as she gets older. However, saying that, I think learning a musical instrument or three is a great thing to do and is good for the soul and wellbeing of being on the 'right path'....much better going to music class after school or whatever than smashing folk's windows and whatever else the 'wrong crowd' dare each other to do.

Sirius.

Sirius.
Deffo agree with you there sirius,

I took music as a gcse, i didnt really learn much apart from classical composers, which back when i was 15/16 was not considered cool
It didnt even teach me to read music, which looking back is bizarre

I look at some of the school courses now & they look so more interesting, Djing & music production being one of them, its probably the 'in' thing to take at school nowadays

Think we're the same age aren't we? We had 2 Atari ST's when I was doing GCSE music with a Roland SC7 sound module and some shitty software called Notator Alpha. I did one of my compositions using that, propper ace piano tune lol The teachers didn't really know how to use it, but I found it pretty straight forward, kind of like the next step up from Octomed!

All children should be encoraged to play an instrument, Its good for the mind & helps concentration. Some of you know i play drums, guitar & bass etc so i made sure my 2 got the best. My eldest has private piano lessons & is now upto her grade 2, she also has an electric guitar which i teach her chords on. My youngest went singing for 4 years, played recorder & has now settled on violin, we got father christmas to bring her one last year and she loves it. Both of them them have played in a live situation too either through school or local clubs they goto.

I can play the guitar & piano quite well

I agree with Zoom - playing a musical instrument is a must - everyone should do it

Ladies... have a strum for me

I started playing trumpet when I was 5... I was never any good [wrong choice of instrument], but I could read music properly from about 6, and that has been very useful.

The encouragement my parents gave me was probably not the right sort. Try and encourage from a distance without being in-yer-face with it.

About 9 years ago I bought myself a Sax, and more or less taught myself to play. I had a few lessons to develop technique. I also bought a clarianet too, but I prefer the sax.

I love to relax blowing my own horn (fnnarrrr warrumph!).

I learned to play the recorder from a very young age and can probably still play it! I also used to play the treble which is like a big recorder lol! I had a go at violin lessons and the clarinet, but hated it so gave them up. My aunty plays the piano and organ so she gave me a few lessons on those. I can still play a few things on the piano and with 2 hands at a push! I wish Id kept my piano lessons up, really regret that I started learning the kit years ago and absolutely loved it I really really really want my own drum kit, I was just starting to get somewhere with it. I had a go on the guitar and bass but it hurt my fingers lol! Ive also had a go on the flute, but I couldn’t get my lips right lol!!

I am definitely going to encourage my kids to learn an instrument, but Im guessing that between Pauly and me they will be DJ’s at 2 years old lol!!

I can play the cornet (kinda similar to the trumpet) and was first cornet in the school band. Although I would have to have a go for a while to get back into the swing of things. I can read music, as well.

I tried learning the guitar and got one but my little fingers are fucked and unfortunately you need them to play string instruments lol so it was never my forte..... I'd love to play the violin as well but I don't think I'll ever be able to unless some miracle happens and my fingers sort themselves out

I also can play the clarinet and I wish I'd never stopped playing that to be honest coz I was good at it (as I was with the cornet but i think the clarinet sounds nicer).

I was looking on ebay a while back and they aren't too expensive so I might get one when I have the money. Trouble is, I don't have the money or time really in between work, going out, learning to dj and buying records, learning to drive and then saving up for a car etc etc.........

I will defo be encouraging my kids to play instruments and I don't think it's something I'll be bothered about the cost of coz it's a skill and a hobby for them....

xx
