After much thinking, the only cover i can think of that is better is Stevie Wonder with 'We Can Work it Out', which is obviously a Beatles classic (tho not a fave of mine). IMHO he not only sings it better (his vioce just seems made for it), but the whole music sounds far more catchy, and obviously soulfull thus more erm, meanigfull.

Anymore for anymore?

I played that at me mate's wedding at the w/e too - firm fave of mine - used to get hammered at a night called Sweat @ Brum Institute about 1994 (TC / Ed did you make it to these uns ?)

I love the ironic way that Stevie sings the lyrics "Try to see it my way...." If only we could eh Stevie.... (NB tongue in cheek before I get slagged for 'picking on the blind' )

As for other cover versions these are most mentionable:

Whyte - Purple Haze (dodgy pic sleeve aside )
Voodoo Child - forgotten artist - samples b line from Mantronix - Got to have your love with Voodoo Chile lyrics
Jam on the mutha - Hotel California
Moodswings - Spiritual High (wicked use of State of Independance lyrics sang by Chrissie Hynde)

Possibly. 94 is a bit of a blur. They used to play stuff like that at Tressines, which was a Mon or Tues or Thurs I think. THat was a good night. NWA, THe Doobie brothers. Loads of funk and soul.

you have got to be kidding me, john lennon vocal's on "i am the walrus" are legendary, they make the song...... i really cant see how you think a lennon, burgess, brown wannabe could perform it better than him

I think that the Acid Brass' version of Voodoo Ray pisses over that shite which Gerald released.

Seriously though, I do like the Brass versions. I quite like the Senior Coconut Kraftwerk stuff, but have to be in the right frame of mind

I only went to the Institute once, I cant for the life of me remember what the night was called though, suppose it could have been that though, maybe its as likely as any other as it would have definitely been around 94/95

The Sisters Of Mercy version of Gimme Shelter is a towering, monumental piece of work, as is their version of Hot Chocolate's Emma.

Laibach's rework of One Vision, Geburt Einer Nation, is like Queen guesting at the Nurmberg rally.

Nick Cave's version of All Tomorrow's Parties rocks like a bastard. In fact the album it's on is a covers album called Kicking Against The Pricks, and all are good.

This Mortal Coil's version of Song To The Siren is in the top ten records ever.

That's off the top of my head - let me have a think about this one.

<edit> How could I forget Johnny Cash's version of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt. A recording to make you weep, and that's even without the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go If you haven't seen it I urge you to watch it. Now.

Oh and to answer the thread, I agree with whoever said Gary Jules 'Mad World' ... far more evocative IMO
that line "the dreams in which i'm dying are the best I've ever had" ... so haunting and sad

I also have quite a soft spot for Mica Paris' version of "One" by U2 , I love the U2 version too though

Theres probably more but thats all I can think off the top of my head at then min

Flunk - Blue Monday, can't say it's better, but I'd say its as good as the New Order version, just for being so different!

well, controvoyshal as ever, but I thought Gary Jules' Mad World cover was pure distilled toss. Furthermore, he himself is a miserable, whiny-voiced, shite-cap wearing ferret (or ferr-eeeeeeeeeeet, as The Macc Lads would say)...

Tears for Fears, on the other hand, are pop-music Gods.
Some Stipe-a-like American ponce singing & playing piano next to some other twat with a cello cannot possibly be an improvement.
That song is all that I hate about cover versions.
There are some good uns though...

Tool - No Quarter (Led Zeppelin)
Oasis - Cum On Feel The Noize (Slade)
The Cardigans - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Black Sabbath)
Cyndi Lauper - I Drove All Night (Roy Orbison)
PJ Harvey - Shot of Love/Highway 61 Revisited (Bob Dylan)
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2U (Prince)
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey In The Jar (???)
Ratt - Back in Black (AC/DC)
