Try some stuff called Builders chalk ( pronounced cork ?? ) you dont have to sand it, just put it on and smooth with a damp cloth, but thats only if its a small-ish hole.
This stuff is ace for filling around skirting and door frames as it very flexible so it doesnt crack like normal filler. I have used normal filler before on my skimmed walls but it always cracks this stuff works amazingly

if its a big hole then ya better get ya filler or browning out then skim over it.

Its decorators caulk. I built my last house with that stuff, its ace- my best friend in the whole world infact.

yes this stuff is amazing my uncle just decorated our hall and used this on the skirtings and gaps in the dorrs and shite - they look bloody brand new now
