The Perfect Housemate?

I finally made my escape from Cumbria recently to Newton where I lodge with a girl in a gorgeous house . BUT....its not the same as owning or renting with someone. So after the New Year i hope to find someone to rent with around Warrington/Manchester.
What do you think makes a good housemate? and how did you end up with yours? Plus have you ever lived with any awful people? I have been pretty lucky although one never ever did any washing up (I was far too soft and did it all for her)

When my lease was up on my flat I thought about sharing but the amount of fuckin weirdos I met whilst looking was unbelievable.
My mates have asked me loads to share with them but I think that's a bad idea if you want to stay mates, lol

I wouldn't want to live with a scruffy bastard who never cleaned up or a bore who never went out. But I wouldn't want to live with someone who partied all the time...because I have no will power and would never go to work, lol
Whoever you end up sharing with, I'd set down the ground rules from day one so there is no misunderstandings..good luck

I wouldn't want a fit girl as a flatmate as she's be bringing home loads of guys (it would be alright though if they're all my mates).

Some guy that most girls seem to fancy though should have a far more desirable effect and pull in the ladies

He can't please them all, so I could help him out when he needs a rest

Cath

I have lived in shared houses now for over 7 years

The lad (Tim) i live with is sound. I met him when he moved up here from down south and moved into this shared house i was living in. I had lived with about 4 different tennnats in this house. Three lads and one fit as fuck lass.

I had all sorts of problems ranging from general arguments about tv or cleaning to actually getting me switch card nicked and used.

The house was a real mess. But it was cheap. It was set up so we all had our own locked bedrooms and shared the rest of the house. It wasnt wat i wanted long term so couldnt wait to get out. As luck would have it my uncle had a house that he was renting locally through an estate agent but the agreement was coming to an end. So he asked me if i wanted to move in but as i couldnt afford it on my own i asked Tim.

We both trusted each other to pay the bills and with each others posessions so it made sense. Over the next few years we carried on sharing and moved a few times until the house were in now. Its owned by his girlfriends cousin so we get it fairly cheap and is a nice house. Its a far cry from the shit hole we started in. As we have got older we have aqquired more stuff so trust is a must. Thats the main thing you will need to make it work, Theres nothing worse than being at work and wondering if ya stuffs gonna be there when ya get home.

I am quite fortunate that i found someone i can trust and have become good mates. If it had been a mate i had chose to move in with first it would have been doomed from the start.

My advice is be careful. The good thing is you will be looking for a much better quality house share than i started with so the chances are the people living there will be less likely to be turn out like the peeps i had to live with in the first place.

Although theres loads of negatives the postives are you will hopefully meet a new friend or two and it beats living on your own and having ya no one to have a chin wag wit without picking up the phone or going on the net.

Good Luck

Andy

I've shared with a few gaffs with mates over the years...we're all as bad as each other to live with an been mates since day dot...so even if we got a greivence, it was a case of a bit of a tear up...then its all forgetten about 10 mins later an get the beers in.

Funniest flat mate I ever had was in London, me pal rang me up in Manchester one day an said, 'dya wanna start on this site in London, top dollar an I've already sorted you a place to stay, jump on the train tomoz an i'll meet ya at Euston'...so i did, had a few beers when I got there, then he takes me to this shit hole high rise estate in Hackney, on about the 16th floor or somat daft. Turns out the kid I'm lodgein with is this massive black fella from Martineeque in the carribean an can only speak French an a few words of English.

After a few weeks tho we managed to sort some type of mad lingo out we could communicate with an had a right ball...he was a top lad...always had a massive fat one on the go an he was a chef by trade an used to cook me some top carribean scrans when i got in from work. He was on fire on the bongos as well an used to drum along to my CD's!

Agree with the comments about not being easy sharing with a friend. I shared with a close friend once, we didn't speak for a couple of years afterwards , and other friends of mine (I did warn them !!!! ) after living together also ended up falling out, two of them still not sorted it and the other two only now after a couple of years are becoming mates again. I've had two friends ask if they could share with me, I just smiled and hoped they didn't bring it up again, they didn't phew and now two more of my friends despite warnings from absolutely everyone (as these two do not get on at all or whatsover, always arguing and basically don't like each other very much) have stupidly decided to house share, the chaos has already started with them.

Male friends that have shared didn't seem to have the same problem. Maybe their way is healthier, they rip each other to bits have it out say what they want to say then it's gone and forgot about.

A stranger who then becomes a mate through sharing sounds like a better way, though can understand your frustration and concern about oddballs ! be careful and best of luck hope it all works out for you.

It can be a good thing sharing with a m8 you have to give n take and do your share, have it out if something needs saying and yeah there needs to be upmost trust between yourselves

In theory sounds easy but the above can be to much like hard work even with the bestest of friends, luckily I dont have that problem with hamster thank fookery

If your gonna share with someone you have to take a risk to some extent and see what happens
